The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) John 4:9 NIV
Herein the Samaritan woman does not deny our Lord’s request but wonders why a Jew would make a request of a Samaritan woman.
How did the woman know that Jesus was a Jew? It was most likely His manner of dress and the manner in which He spoke.
There was significant animosity between Jews and Samaritans, who were considered half-breeds, as many of the captives taken by the Assyrians in 721 BC intermarried with their captors. This obviously created hatred from a true Jew.
Jesus had no issue with crossing over boundaries that a devout Jew would not. Our Master spoke and dined with sinners. He came to save those who would come to Him. Be glad and rejoice in the Lord!
