Believers’ are never unemployed by Robert Schaetzle
I read a report the unemployment rate has now climber to 14.7% with more than 20 million Americans not working due to the current covid-19 pandemic. I’ve had a career with our U.S. Government as a Civil Servant for over 40 years before my own retirement.
I came to faith in Jesus at age 15, and am now close to 81 years old. You might say for over 65 years now I’ve never been unemployed. The Apostle Paul was a tent maker. I was a civil servant. Some might be engineers, or doctors, or teachers, or tax collectors.
But consider, when we make our profession of faith to become ‘Followers of Jesus,’ we’re under the leadership of His ‘Great Commission.’
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8 ESV
What we receive as our commission to ‘go and make disciples…’ thisbecomes our true vocation. In other words, what I did serving 40 years employed as a ‘civil servant,’ was really my ‘avocation.’ What Paul did as a tent maker, was really his ‘avocation.’
When we’re serving another to God’s honor, we’re fulfilling a portion of God’s ‘Great Commission’ to unlimited opportunity.
“…and whoever would be first among you must be slaveof all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:44-45ESV
We never know what little act of kindness might be to encourage another as part of being employed in God’s service, and bring honor to Him. No… ‘Believers’ are really never unemployed.
