Genesis 6:4 Commentary and Genetics
by Mark A. Becker
There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. - Genesis 6:4
We find that the “sons of God” (Hebrew – bene Elohim) in Genesis 6:4 are angels when compared with the book of Job.
Job 1:6 - “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.”
Job 2:1 - “Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.”
Job 38:4-7 - “Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?”
In all three instances, the sons of God refer to angels. The only humans to ever be called sons of God were Adam and Messiah Jesus. Both were new creations, sinless and perfect. (Eve might be considered in this category, but she was created biologically from Adam himself). All other humans were created biologically in sin and were not created uniquely.
The angels also fall into this category. They too, were created uniquely, perfect, and without sin; thus they are referred to as “sons of God.”
(Note: Christians today who are born again are sons of God only because they are new creations in Christ.)
These sons of God “came into the daughters of men, and they bare children to them,” which resulted in the giants/Nephilim/men of renown. What exactly happened here?
It appears that fallen angels descended to earth and took the daughters of men to try and alter the gene pool in an attempt to thwart the coming of the Messiah.
In addition, the aim seems to be of producing from the human race, using genetic manipulation, a species that would not be human and, therefore, ineligible for salvation.
But, how was this done? Doesn't the Bible say that angels don't procreate?
“Jesus answered, “You are mistaken because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. In the resurrection, people will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Instead, they will be like the angels in heaven.” - Matthew 22:29.
In the above passage, Jesus said we won't procreate or have spouses in heaven like the angels. The text says that the sons of God “came into the daughters of men.” It seems that these unions were entirely meant to corrupt the gene pool, so genetics seem to be the answer.
I postulate that the fallen angels were manipulating the gene pool either with the fetus in the mother's womb or manipulating the gene pool in an embryo outside the mother's womb and re-implanting the embryo. Far-fetched? I think not; we are doing it today in science labs all over the world.
This created the giants/Nephilim/men of renown that inspired the pagan god and goddess religions of the world from Babylon to Egypt, from Greece to Rome, and elsewhere – otherwise known as the “mythologies” of the post-flood world.
It is interesting that the giants reemerged after the flood. Two possibilities on that: One, there was another rebellion by the fallen angels going into the daughters of men, or two, one of the eight members on board the ark was a carrier of the gene(s). In regard to the latter, many believe it was probably Ham's wife as the descendants of Ham populated ancient Canaan where the giants were abundantly reported before and after Israel conquered the land. I postulate that both are plausible.
Another interpretation on this controversial passage is that the “sons of God” are the sons of the “godly” line of Seth and that the “daughters of men” are the daughters of the line of Cain. This interpretation is clearly wrong for the following reasons.
The “sons of God” (Hebrew – bene Elohim) are clearly angels when compared to the “law of first mention” in the oldest book of the Bible, Job (see Job 1:6, 2:1, & 38:4-7). If the intention of the verse was to convey this interpretation, the Holy Spirit would have inspired Moses to write: “... when the sons of Seth came into the daughters of Cain.”
Additionally, “the daughters of men” is all inclusive and would definitely include the daughters of Seth. Also, how could human procreation – made a mandate from God to all humanity – produce the giants/Nephilim/men of renown?
Finally, Seth's descendants were far from “godly” as all were destroyed in the deluge of the global flood except Noah and his family.
