Isaiah 49:16a New Living Translation (NLT) See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands.
In times of distress and calamity it is good to remember the words of God given to others that include us today. This is one of those words. As we face this new health threat that is overwhelming our world it is good to know that God has not forgotten us; as a people and as an individual.
Tattoos are a common sight on every part of the human anatomy these days so this verse may be seen superficially if one is not careful. In other translations the verse says engraved rather than written which gives you name more permanence. But we still miss the real message. For we are not just a name on God's great had but this is a reference to us as a person. God thinks of us continually and as a had tattoo cannot be ignored so we are ever before God's remembrance. Spurgeon calls that "unbelief which often makes us talk about God forgetting us when He does nothing of the kind.
I could quote the every common, 'I will never leave you or forsake your verse.' [Deuteronomy 31:6] that God gave in the Old Testament or one in Hebrews 13:5. I think we need to see that God knows just where we are and what we are going through right now more than just being with us.
Being in God's hand is up close and personal. There are verses that say he carries us in His hands and I think that is what this verse is also saying. But not as a group, although He is doing that. But I think in times like these we need to remember we are not a number or just part of a bigger picture to God. We are a very special, person that God is caring about.
This verse should help us weather the isolation, fear, and worry that is everywhere. It should give us comfort in know we really are not all alone or forgotten. God is not only with us but we are indelible inscribed on His hands so we know that we are ever before Him whether we recognize that or not. So be comforted and encouraged as we weather this time and remember you are intimately important to God and ever before His face.
