All of the girls from Jessica's cabin had been out having lunch when Jessica ran away, but they came back to change into their bathing suits to go swimming after lunch was over. Paige Everwood noticed that there was a note on Jessica's bed. She went over and picked it up. When she read it, she gasped. "Girls, come quick!" she cried.
All of the other girls ran to her. "What's wrong?" Susan asked.
"It's Jessica! She ran away! Look at this note!" Paige cried, handing her the note.
Susan took the note and red it, and her face turned pale. She remembered how she had not spoken to Jessica for a week and how the last thing she said to Jessica was that she never wanted to speak to her again. She was angry at the time she said that, but what if she never really did speak to Jessica again? What if something happened to her? "I'll get Peter and Bill," she said, running out of the bunkhouse. She frantically ran all over the camp until she found Peter and Bill getting ready for the Marco Polo game that they were going to lead the kids in when they went swimming.
"Counselor Peter and Counselor Bill, come quick!" she cried when she got to them. "It's Jessica. She's run away. Look at this note! We have to find her!"
Peter's and Bill's faces turned just as pale as Susan's was as they read the note. Peter felt bad. "That was probably what she wanted to talk to me about in my office earlier," he said. "I should have gotten off the phone right away." He shook his head, then looked at Susan. "Did she say anything to you about how she was feeling?"
Susan shook her head. "We haven't spoken to each other in a week."
"Why not?" Bill asked. He and Peter didn't know how they could have missed that.
"Well, Peter, this is kind of embarrassing to say, but ever since Jessica and I got to camp, we, uh, we kind of got crushes on you, and we, uh, recently had a fight about you." Susan was embarrassed for admitting it, but she felt she should tell Peter and Bill what the problem was, since Jessica had run away. This was an emergency.
Bill looked at Peter. "It's funny. When we were kids, you were always such a geek, and now you've got a fiancée and two teenage female campers fighting over you!"
Susan's heart sank the way Jessica's had. "You--you're engaged?" she asked Peter.
Peter smiled sympathetically and said, "Yes, Susan, I'm getting married in October, but if I were a teenage boy, I would definitely consider dating you. Bill and I know what having crushes and fighting over them is like."
"That's right," Bill said. "When we were kids and the foxy Julia Reese moved into our neighborhood, Peter and I were giving each other nosebleeds over her!"
"And we felt hurt when we found out she was dating a quarterback from her high school," Peter said, "but God gave each of us the ones He intended for us. Bill is married to Janice now, and I'm getting married this fall." He hugged Susan close and said, "Don't worry, sweetheart. God will bring you and Jessica the right men someday." He gently kissed the top of her head and said, "OK, now I'm going to go and find Jessica and tell her the same thing."
