Read your morning paper lately? Tuned into the TV main stream news? Talked to your trusted neighbor, through the backyard fence? Gossiped a little politics in the church pew? Well, then you know. The twins of Socialism and Liberalism are raising their ugly, unpleasant heads in America’s God-given freedom.
With these ever-increasing metaphors comes America’s pending 2020 national election, an election like none other in history, with so much at stake. In this election, certain presidential candidates will preach the ongoing famous “Government is our savior” sermon, along with many popular, yet unattainable promises of prosperity.
Although these promises will never be nor were ever intended to be carried out, they do somehow garner the attention of a certain segment of America’s population. They play on the emotions, desires and hopes of people who are not of a rational or logical mindset.
I realize in recent years; America has seen an uptick of cynicism within the mainstream populace. Many don’t think very highly of politics and government.
President Regan. America’s 40th President of the United States once said “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.” What do you think he must have meant from those nine words? Well, your guess is as good as mine. My opinion is that maybe the Government thinks it knows better than you what is good for you.
If you are like me, older than dirt and twice as gritty, you may just remember the words of the little judge, George C. Wallace. Spoken on the floor of an old flatbed trailer at the backdrop of an old fashion country and western string band when he was campaigning for the presidency of The United States as a third-party candidate, he said:
“You can take all the Democratic candidates for President and all the Republican candidates for President. Put them in a sack and shake them up. Take the first one that falls out, grab him by the nape of the neck, and put him right back in the sack. Because there is not a dime's worth of difference in any of them.”
In his most recent 2020 State of the Union speech to Congress, President Trump said “Here, in the United States, we are alarmed by new calls to adopt socialism in our country ... Tonight, we renew our resolve that America will never be a socialist country.”
Dr. Larry P. Arnn, President of Hillsdale College, recently wrote, “Because men are not angels, government is necessary. Because no man stands to another as God to man, or as man to beast, government must be based on consent.”
In other words, as American citizens, we should all live in a consensus of harmony, sanctioned by divine instruction. The Holy Scripture puts it this way. Authorities are established by God (Romans 13:1), instituted by Him (Romans 13:2) as God's servants (Romans 13:4,6). Therefore, we are to submit to authorities (Romans 13:1, 5) by giving them the proper respect. (Romans 13:7) Yes, America is still “One nation Under God”, and “The Land of the free, and the home of the brave.” We as a nation will always hold to the divinely directed motto of “In God we trust.”
Here it is, this realistic live-action vision, this parable of an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. I trust the parable will give you a true grasp of the need for America’s God-given freedoms entitled” America Under The Glass".
“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)
We had stopped to camp out for the night, my young political science student group and myself, on the top of a famous mountain. Our final destination was a school field trip to our nation’s capital.
There it was, beautiful landscape on hand everywhere. Warm fresh-smelling mountain air was sweeping across the green landscape. Wet dew hung on the mountain boulders. The wind sang its familiar nature tunes through the big trees. The whole world was lit up in the prosperous valley beneath the mountain’s knees. I surely understood why my students were so ecstatic, as they looked up upon those white puffy clouds. Cameras were clicking everywhere.
“OK, class, I know you’re excited, but camp lights out at nine, tomorrow we have a rather long ride down into our nation’s capital. I’m sure we all want to be wide awake as we visit the Smithsonian Institute," was my final announcement of the night.
I had no more tucked into my sleeping bag, laying my head on the grassy pillow, till a vision started. We found ourselves suddenly arriving at our nation’s capital destination, the students and myself. There we were, in the National Archives building.
Before I realized it, my childhood persona took over, beating the students to the glass display cases. There was America’s history, laid out before us. America’s past, present and future liberty was all safely preserved and encased behind freedoms glass. The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution of The United States of America were on display along with many other historic documents behind the glass. It was like looking at our freedom through a glass.
I could hardly see these great archives through the protected glass, for all the uncontrollable tears flowing down my cheeks, my loyal students following suit, as well. How proud that made me feel! God has surely been so good to America, what a nation of freedom! We must never let Him down, I thought.
Suddenly, I was overcome by an unexpected intrusion. It was a large, surrounding cloud divinely placed for a purpose. Precipitously, my mind began to travel through today’s mindset; the progressive attitude of our society, the eroding of America’s freedoms and the ungodly turnaround of America’s principles and teachings. I couldn’t help but ponder a little about this great country of ours.
I thought of those brave Americans who had given the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of our great country. Civil rights loyalists sitting in those dark, cold jail cells, and unknown babies who will never see the light of day. Marriage vows being desecrated. The Bible being refused in the halls of education, and government, and fake news being disseminated instead. The founding laws of our land being blindly ignored, and the uncertainty of today’s politics. What a mess we’ve made of our country and our freedoms and liberties! I whispered a little prayer of concern.
The cloud majestically lifted, and my interest was being divinely fixed on another important encased document. It was a weather-beaten Old English Bible, its torn and worn pages entering my view summarizing an all-important verse of Scripture.
“if My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (II Chronicles 7:14)
Attached alongside this famous Bible was an authentic hand-scribed declaration, written in the old English vernacular. The writer’s badly torn signature was illegible.
“Hereby written, by divine guidance of all-mighty God, the Supreme Judge of the world, we the under signed do hereby declare and approve the tranquility of His commands, in exchange for the posterity results of His promise. So, help us God. Done by the consent of our Almighty Creator, God, and in unanimous consent of the Church of God, in this the year of our Lord.”
“Wow, what a group of Old Time Religion lay preachers these men must have been! If only I could have sat under their teachings,” I thought.
By divine instruction, in prayerful thought, I surely agreed with the unknown writer of this inspiring note, whoever he or she was. We Christians who hold to the principles of God must take a stand for the principles of our divine heritage and in support of our family, our children, our grandchildren and beyond. If we do, we will surely see the promised results.
Turning now to gather my students, and to move on with the reminder of our field trip, something mysterious occurred. We were no longer there in our nation’s capital pondering over our nation’s historic documents. It was all gone. Vision ended.
We were back at the mountain top camp ground. The sunshine was pouring in over the shadowing tree-covered mountain range, being kissed by the morning dew. Wow, what a nice bright day! I must have really been tired, for I surely overslept. The students are all out, packed and raring to go.
“What about this vision? Did it ever continue?” one might ask.
No, I don’t believe it was supposed to. I had seen all that was intended. Be it a vision, a dream, or a figment of my subconscious, this message had surely grabbed my attention. I didn’t actually realize I would discover what I had discovered. I never expected to be shown what was revealed to me. But I surely learned a lesson that momentous day.
Lessons learned; it’s not about the various known political groupings, or the attitude of our progressive citizens, or even what people may think or say. It’s all about our country’s divine guidance. (Daniel 2:19-23) Our Lord, the founding ruler of the universe, is still in command. What He says goes.
Much like many religious denominations, our well-known political parties are still imperfect groupings, man-made. For, America is at war, a spiritual war of good versus evil. Our enemies, being the demonic hosts of Satan, are always invisibly assembled for mortal combat. (Ephesians 6:12)
What then is the solution to this progressive human mentality? Simply put, it’s our God- directed frame of mind. What should our divine approach to today’s living be? Like any other conflict, we must put on our battle gear. (Ephesians 6:10-11,13) And what is this special spiritual battle gear? (Ephesians 6:14-17) Last but not least, like any other battle, be sure to submit this battle to prayer. (Ephesians 6:18) Amen!
Now, are you ready to go to war, to let yourself be heard? If so, here’s a few suggestions:
Get Involved. Apathy and ignorance are not allowed in God’s world.
Let your voice be heard, at home, at work, at play, and most importantly, in governmental circles and the church.
Choose to write to newspapers, lobby for Biblical principles, attend governmental and civic meetings.
Prayerfully seek the truth and make assessments and decision, based on Biblical convictions.
Above all, prepare to vote intelligently, based on Biblical principles. The crucial elements are self-examination, prayer, and Biblical devotions. Seek God's will in every decision you make. Don’t forget to pray for more gospel-focused politicians who will seek to serve the true gospel’s interest. (I Cor. 15:3-4)
Now I ask you in closing, when’s the last time you attended a city council meeting, spoke up in your state lecture, or even let your convictions be known in church?
Someone once said, the three biggest lies of history are, ‘The check is in the mail”, “Next year your taxes are going to be lower” and I’ve got an offer you can't refuse." How do all these idiom’s parallel with today’s American politics? Well, you be the judge. Amen!
