Does it seem like the ground is constantly moving under your feet? When I was a child, I did not worry. My parents were trustworthy and took care of me. I never questioned their love. As an adult I can now see, that there were uncertain times in my childhood, but I did not experience instability as a result. I think this is one of the very difficult things about "adulting." We see and must handle all that life throws at us. How can we thrive in this environment?
Psalm 119:89-96 (CSB)89 Lord, your word is forever;it is firmly fixed in heaven.90 Your faithfulness is for all generations;you established the earth, and it stands firm.91 Your judgments stand firm today, for all things are your servants.92 If your instruction had not been my delight,I would have died in my affliction.93 I will never forget your precepts, for you have given me life through them.94 I am yours; save me,for I have studied your precepts.95 The wicked hope to destroy me,but I contemplate your decrees.96 I have seen a limit to all perfection, but your command is without limit.
Look at the language in this stanza: "forever, firmly fixed, all, established, stands firm, without limit. " Aren't we looking for something that is firm and unshakeable? What is it that he finds stabilizing? God's Word!
What does he say about God's word? It is forever and firmly fixed in heaven. It is not temporary. It is not earthly. It is God's word and He is unchanging. He can be counted on to be the same, both now and forever. What He has given us is reliable, because it is not contingent on varying times and places. It flows out of His character.
What does it say about His faithfulness? Established and standing firm. His faithfulness is unwavering. It stands. You can count on it!
Maybe your childhood was not like mine, maybe it was. Life throws many experiences our way. God's faithfulness is not a result of our life experiences, it is a result of His character. Regardless of the stability of your life journey, try to see God as the rock on which your life is built. Recognize that He as laid out the words of life in His word. Seek His word, judgements, instruction, precepts, and commands. Know they bring life, not bondage and instability.
Will you pray this stanza of Psalm 119 as a prayer today?
