There are many paths we can follow. I personally am constantly trying to move forward down some path. I am not always on the right path, but in my mind, I think I know the way. It has taken me decades to learn that all the ideas I formulate in my head are not necessarily a better path than the current path. And, we haven't even begun to talk about how I love control and want my own way. How about you?
And what about all the fun stuff? I mean, isn't the real fun out there in the world? Am I missing out on the best? Or, are God's ways the best? Do they just limit me and box me in? Or, are they limitless and freeing?
Psalm 119:1-8 (CSB)
1 How happy are those whose way is blameless,
who walk according to the Lord’s instruction!
2 Happy are those who keep his decrees
and seek him with all their heart.
3 They do nothing wrong;
they walk in his ways.
4 You have commanded that your precepts
be diligently kept.
5 If only my ways were committed
to keeping your statutes!
6 Then I would not be ashamed
when I think about all your commands.
7 I will praise you with an upright heart
when I learn your righteous judgments.
8 I will keep your statutes;never abandon me.
The Psalmist addresses the initial principle. What does it mean to be blessed or happy? He answers this with the following points: 1) he whose way is blameless 2) who walks according to the Lord's instruction 3) who keeps his decrees 4) who seeks him with all their heart 5) who does nothing wrong 6) who walks in his ways. He notes that God has commanded us to keep his precepts and statues. This would save him from shame.
Do we believe this is true? Are we convinced that God's way is the better way? It seems even though our theology says we are free, we are still buying the world’s lies. We cannot quite escape the thought that we are giving up the fun things, rather than gaining a better life in Christ. We still wish we could do some of the old things, but we know that in the Lord we are not allowed to do these things. We are failing to believe down in our innermost thoughts that God's way is good, freedom, peace, joy, happiness, contentment, and a better way to live. This Psalm is going to restate over and over the value of seeking God and His ways. It is going to show us that pursuing God, through what He has written down, will lead to blessing, will light our path, and will be a delight. The result being that we will not be ashamed before Him. So, let us take to heart verse 7. Let us set about to learn His righteous judgements. If we want a happy life, a lit path, and to walk in His ways, we must seek Him with all our hearts. His word is the place where He has recorded who He is, what He says about Himself, what He says about the way to live, and how we are to walk. When we open its cover, we are setting out to find Him in its pages. This is one of the spiritual disciplines we can employ to bring happiness, joy, peace and His presence.
So, what you about you? Will you seek to know about Him, to know Him and to find how to walk His path? Will you ask Him to make you believe that His way is the best way? Will you give of some time and energy to do so?
