Whoever does not love does not know God because God is love. This is love, not that we loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sin. 1 John 4:8,10 [NRSV]
We all wonder what God is really like. Who is He? Jesus said that if you have seen Him [Jesus] you have seen the Father God. John says that God is love. Not that He is loving but He is Love.
Since that is His essence He cannot be otherwise but loving. Yet His love is perfect and we in our imperfection miss what that perfection means. True love does not condone evil but loves the one doing it. Perfect love includes everyone equally. Yet in our humanity we divide love into levels and types and give or withhold it as our mood dictates. God who is love never wavers and is not fickle depending on where we are or what we are doing.
We use the term a Loving God and we try and define that. There is a song called 'The Love of God' that tries to put down what the infinite measure of God and His love is. To put its words into modern language it says; if the oceans were made of ink and the sky was made of paper and each of us was an excellent writer, to try and put all that God is and how He shows us His love would empty the oceans and fill all the sky and yet would not even begin to express that God is love.
Knowing this fact does not mean we understand it, but it does give us something we can use. If we accept the fact that God is love and He loves us completely, we never have to feel alone or abandoned. It doesn't matter if we are being good or bad, the love of God is showered on us. He never abandons us even when we abandon Him.
As long as we have breath we can have that love dwell in us not just over us. For when we ask for forgiveness in Jesus' name we receive not only total forgiveness but we also receive the indwelling of His Spirit. Now His love is in and over us. And once we are filled with His love we cannot help but love others just as He does.
This is a precious fact we need to keep before us at all times. God is love and He loves us just as we are. However, it doesn't end with God loving us. Since we have God's love dwelling within us, He expects us to share that love with others. Jesus declared that one of the ways the world would know that we belong to Him is by how we love. Many of us today have forgotton that important part of Christian character. It is easy for us to love those who are lovable, but the unlovable are the ones who need our love the most. Perhaps this world would not be so divided and fragmented if Christians were more loving. If we want others to know God as we do then we need to show them that God is love by being vessels that He can love others through.
