We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you. 2 Corinthians 4:10-12 NIV
How is it that both death and life can be working in the body? Doesn’t that seem contradictory?
From an earthly standpoint, if one thinks about it, the body is in the process of dying every second that we live. Each second we draw closer to our exit from this world.
Now to the spiritual realm of death and life in the body. When we made a decision to accept the Lord’s invitation of salvation, we did it with a cost attached. We had to decided to let go of the desire for earthly treasures. Yes, we had to acknowledge that we must die to our earthly desires. In this manner we carry the death of the Lord Jesus in our bodies. It is a reminder to us of the sacrifice He willingly made on our behalf. With His death as a reminder of our salvation, we can then allow the Holy Spirit to indwell us. The light of Jesus Christ lives within us. We desire that it radiate throughout us, that others might see the glory of God. By sharing the message of Jesus Christ, we plant the seed which can lead to true life for others, a new life lived in the Savor of man. So, yes, both death and life are at work in the believer as the seed is planted that others might come to know eternal life through Jesus Christ.
