That which is born of GOD overcomes the world. And, this is the victory that overcomes the world—even our faith! Who is he that overcomes the world, only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of GOD? 1 John 5:4-5
What does it mean to be an over-comer, or to “overcome” the world? The Webster’s Concise Family Dictionary describes the word “overcome” in this way: “To conquer; to make helpless or exhausted,” and again: “To gain the superiority.” In clear terms, to overcome means: “To prevail in every way.” As Christians, we need to come to a concise understanding that when we came to Christ, we did not enter into a religious organization and commit to following a set of doctrinal guidelines, nor did we enter into soul-ish practices that seek to raise our state of consciousness where philosophies are taught to try to inspire one to be a “better self.” But as Christians, to come to a clear revelation that we have been plucked out of a worldly system that is cursed and riddled with spiritual death is more than important—it is vital!
We have, by our own acceptance of Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior—died to this world; its system and peripherals, we have been given a new nature and have been made citizens of heaven. We are no longer children of this world; and though we live in it—we are no longer of it. The truth is: we are children of the kingdom of The Living GOD and will have to learn the spiritual realities within HIS word, take them in as instruction from a Loving Father; and then learn to apply HIS kingdom principles to our new lives as obedient children in order to be successful as Over-comers of this world.
We have been fooled into thinking that this “overcoming” is nothing more than moving passed a situation or circumstance in our lives and finding rest from it. Although this is not false, it is not the whole truth. Overcoming a smoking or drinking habit is a good thing, and to experience breakthrough from a hard place is great—there is peace in that, and rest from toiling, but being an “over-comer” from the standpoint of the One who said: “Be of cheer for I have overcome the world,”(John 16:33), overcoming is actually not about victory over trials or habits per-se—but about recognizing that the whole world is under the sway of the evil one and fighting the good fight of faith to be freed from dependence on his system of corruption that is in operation in this world.
The word sway in the noun form is defined in this way: “a controlling influence—sovereign power--dominion.” In the verb form, its definition is this: “the ability to exercise influence or authority—dominance.”
When a child of GOD comes to a place in his walk where the voice of GOD has gained the ascendancy above all the contrary voices around him and he is no longer pulled by the allure of the world and its influences; a place with GOD where he has so renewed his mind with the realities of HIS truth that what he sees does not sway him anymore, neither does anything that he would experience have the capacity to shake him, but in his heart his only conviction is what GOD has written, what GOD has spoken and what GOD has promised—this is the one who has exhausted all of the tactics of the prince of the power of the air and has rendered every deceptive weapon of fear, doubt and unbelief in Satan’s arsenal “ineffective.”
The “over-comer” places no confidence in what his eyes see or what his rational mind can comprehend. He is no longer ruled by his senses—but is governed by his quickened spirit; is walking by faith—not by sight and has reached the highest level in the skill of resisting the devil. There is no more struggling for faith within his heart: for the Lord Himself has become the very source of his strength and confidence; even in the midst of darkest turmoil. In his heart—Righteousness reigns. Neither is there a battle for peace in his mind, for the slightest whisper of his Father God to him thunders over even the most clamorous voices of the adversary, saying: “Fear not, for I am with you.” He can distinguish with acute clarity, truth from error in every situation and has learned to discern good from evil in every way. He carries within himself the moral codes of the kingdom and can recognize wickedness—even when hidden behind its most insidious disguises.
The one who has learned to walk this way has risen above the influences; or—“sway” of the evil one; and from his position in Christ, he can look down upon, identify and remove every deceptive veil that the enemy has placed as coverings over the lives of the ignorant—he has become a “participant in the Divine Nature” and will exert his authority in Christ against the enemy fearlessly. With The Word of Truth he will order the way straight in the lives of others and in his own, and establish on earth what has been established in heaven. This kind of man walks in the glorious freedom that GOD has promised, and stands “victorious” in all that he does. He has become an “Over-comer” by the Blood of the Lamb and the word of his testimony.
