Today I would like to begin a two week excursion into the meeting between Jesus and Nicodemus. Thiese verses make up the first half of John 3 and are rich with truth.
Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” John 3:1-2 NIV
Here we meet Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish leaders, a member of the ruling council. He comes to speak with Jesus, and approaches Him in what appears to be a reverent manner, which we can tell from His initial remarks to Jesus. I believe Nicodemus was truly sincere in these remarks, and was not being sarcastic.
I believe Jesus knew the reason Nicodemus had come, and Christ did not turn Him away.
Why did Nicodemus come at night? Could it have been that He did not want fellow council members to know of His wishing to speak with Jesus? This might be true, but I wish to look at it from a positive perspective. It is quite possible that He came at night believing He would be more likely to have a chance to speak with Jesus, as the days were pretty busy for Christ. I believe Nicodemus sincerely wanted to understand more about Christ, and His message.
Hopefully when we come to Christ, we do so as Nicodemus did, knowing that God (the Father) was with Christ. It is true. No one can perform all the signs which Christ did when He walked this earth. I pray that more will have an inquisitive heart like that possessed by Nicodemus. Christ can change the life of the one who earnestly comes to Him.
Other Scripture Verses: We also can read about Nicodemus in John 7:50-51 and John 19:39. Two verses where Jesus is addressed as Rabbi are John 3:26 and John 4:31. Also read John 9:33 in reference to works performed.
