‘A woman came into the house, holding an alabaster flask filled with fragrant and expensive oil. She walked right up to Jesus, and in a lavish gesture of devotion, she poured out the costly oil, and it cascaded over his head.’ Matthew 26:7 (The Passion)
Mary performed a beautiful act of devotion for Jesus. But those who watched her pour the costly oil over Jesus’ head, did not agree. ‘Such a waste!’ they exclaimed. ‘How many poor could have been fed with the cost of this perfume!’ they grumbled.
But at this moment, Mary was intent on honouring Jesus, despite the disciple’s objections. The poor would always be there – but Jesus would not.
How often do we honour others through our service, but neglect the One who is truly worthy of our efforts? We are intent on being devoted to activity in our churches, our communities and among our friends and family. But our best efforts, the first fruits of our lavish devotion, ought to be for Jesus.
Consider the last time we enacted a beautiful gesture of devotion to Christ. What generous, creative act of service can we offer to Him? Perhaps a meal made in His honour, a prayerful, unrushed stroll somewhere peaceful and quiet, lingering in a silent place in His presence, or making a creative piece that glorifies God by using the gift He has given to us. Expressions offering lavish devotion to Jesus are endless.
‘Jesus, forgive me for the times when I outdo myself in service for everyone else but you. I want to express my devotion to you in a very intentional way. May you be blessed through my gift. Amen.’

To be an active observer in a corporate observation to honor Christ is one thing, but to be an individual who honors Christ through a selfless act is quite another, a much more personal and accountable participation in an appreciation. So many choose the former, and so few the latter.
For choosing the latter, the name of Mary of Bethany will live among us as long as the Scriptures exist. She chose well, as did the writer with this article as her gift. Timeless.
