The longer I live the more aware I become of the state of the world’s mindset.
Depression is taking lives every day. However, this doesn’t have to be this way! There is an answer to our problems.
I Remember this story.
An unnamed woman’s story in Luke shares with us the kind of faith God wants us to have.
“And a woman who had [suffered from] a hemorrhage for twelve years [and had spent all her money on physicians], and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His outer robe, and immediately her bleeding stopped. Jesus said, ‘Who touched Me?’ While they all were denying it, Peter [and those who were with him] said, ‘Master, the people are crowding and pushing against You!’ But Jesus said, ‘Someone did touch Me, because I was aware that power [to heal] had gone out of Me.’ When the woman saw that she had not escaped notice, she came up trembling and fell down before Him. She declared in the presence of all the people the reason why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed. He said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith [your personal trust and confidence in Me] has made you well. Go in peace (untroubled, undisturbed wellbeing).” (AMP)
What I love about this woman was that she believed that Jesus would heal her. After 12 years of searching for answers, most of us would have been depressed and hopeless but there was something within her, a faith that we long for, that caused her to reach for Jesus. And that is what fascinates me.
We read in Mark that as she sought help from many physicians she not only was no better but actually got worse.
"and suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse." (AMP)
How many times do we see this very thing in our world today? Sickness is everywhere and yet there are far more doctors today than in those days. The truth is our health and well-being is more than the absence of sickness or disease. Health and well-being is directly linked to our relationship with Our Father in Heaven.
Why? Because we belong to God and without God in our lives we will never be whole. Without God we become sad and know something is missing.
We Cannot Neglect Our Relationship With God
Depression can only be overcome by faith in God. Having material things, wealth, or success, will never complete you and eventually you will find a deep emptiness that will bring depression once again.
The only answer is to commit your ways unto the Lord and read His Word everyday. Talk to Him, Pray with Him, and let Him have first place in your everyday life. How else will you ever get to know Him?
God loves us so much and it pleases God when we trust Him.
“But without faith it is impossible to [walk with God and] please Him, for whoever comes [near] to God must [necessarily] believe that God exists and that He rewards those who [earnestly and diligently] seek Him." (AMP)
It pleases God because He wants us to experience everything He has planned for us but it will take a willingness on our part. All you need to implement is to spend daily time reading His Word and Learning about Him.
Having faith comes by hearing the Word of God everyday. I found that the battles I fought could have easily been won if I had taken more time to read daily and really study God’s Word.
To Learn Comes By Experiencing Life First Hand
This woman had to first learn that men could not help her.
Where men failed, Christ succeeded.
And even though it is clear that her disease was longstanding, she was quickly healed, for as soon as she touched the hem of His garment, “straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up.”
If we delay going to a natural physician, usually the physician says to us that we should have come sooner. But it is to the Glory of Christ that He can heal those who come late to Him.
Many touched Him that Day
As soon as the woman touched Christ’s garment, He felt that “virtue had gone out of Him” and turned around and said, “Who touched me?” As the disciples mildly rebuked Jesus saying, “Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?"
Her touch may have been unnoticed by those around her, and she was probably one of many who touched the Master that day as He walked thru the crowd.
What Jesus felt was a touch of faith and it couldn’t be hidden from Him. It was Jesus’ awareness of a patient who believed she could be healed. In her trembling state of weariness she told Him the truth.
It was this open confession, of her being the one who touched Him, and a public statement before the crowd that her burden for twelve years was gone.
She could have easily felt hopeless and might never have gone to see the Master walking thru the crowd that day. But there was a faith in her that was unshakable.
You see your relationship with God should be first when you walk every day. And when you go out into the world, you will have put on your armor first.
For without God, we can really do nothing. We become vulnerable to a world full of treachery but when God is at the helm we can know He is with us, going before us. Whatever comes our way God will give us strength and understanding and thru that we will grow in faith.
God wants us to enjoy our lives to the fullest and experience all the Joy He intends to give us but if we don’t know God and spend no time learning about Him, then we disconnect the power from our lives.
Think about a lamp. It might be beautiful, and sitting in a place where it can share it’s light and bring light to others but if you don’t plug it in it will never be of any use.
God is our Father and He has purposed that we would enjoy the life He gave us. If we choose to not allow God to bring life giving power to our lives and not plug into the source of all life, then we will never know what God's plan was for us.
Depression is the feeling of despair over life’s problems.
However, depression is only the vehicle where God can teach us more about the reason we need to have faith. Troubles in life, like this woman had, are opportunities for us to learn more about what we really need.
Of course, this woman wanted restored health. I’m sure she had many obligations in life of which were impossible to take care of. Her health was very important or else why would she have not spent all she had. Getting worse as a result of her reaching out to physicians was not encouraging. However, it was this desperate situation that caused her to look deeper into her life.
Those deeper questions, made her realize that nothing in this life matters but our faith in God. In the end we all will die but what we become as a result of our struggles of life is what matters. To know God wants us to have a good life, reveals to us that the problems are opportunities to reach for God and let Him be the Father He really is.
When depression sets in, the only way to overcome it and to grow in faith is to reach for God. Pick up your Bible, find a place you can read and learn of Him. Make a commitment and keep to a schedule everyday. You will never regret it.
As I experienced...
This life changing new habit several years back of daily reading my Bible, I found a Father who loves me So Much….How could I have ever neglected this wonderful relationship for so many years.
Salvation is something we personally work out. No church, nor minister can give it to you. God is the only one you answer to and Jesus is the only Way. Our relationship with God is found in spending quality time and putting Him first every day. It's a choice we make and if we only knew how powerful this choice is and how much it will change everything in our walk the moment we begin.....we would't neglect so great a salvation!
After reading the Bible cover to cover, I remember my first reaction. WOW! I loved God's Word and so I knew that really understanding it I would need to read it again and again. Each time God would teach me new things. As I read each time it was like God was peeling me like an onion, removing layers of blockage for years. Each time I learned something new and wonderful.
Let God be your Father and get to know Him! I promise you that the journey you will embark on with be unforgettable in the most amazing way!
