Exodus 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Exodus 20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:We hear a lot of teaching about keeping the Fourth Commandment which is the keeping of the Sabbath, which is a good thing. But we are also told right after that, to WORK for the other six days. One must always keep God's word in the proper context.Since most of us don't work in an agrarian economy any more, the concept of a "two-day Sabbath" is pretty well taken for granted. At least during recent times of relative prosperity, the two-day "weekend" was fairly normal. And nobody is saying this is a bad thing, in itself. We can thank God for our labor saving devices...and even social progress that permits most of us to not have to labor six sixteen hour days just to survive. But we must never let the command to observe the Sabbath to, in any way detract from the value of work. In fact, our work should be our worship. Adam had a job even before he fell; work in itself is not the curse. In fact, Adam's daily job was his ultimate expression of worship. And he got to walk with God in the cool of the day, every day, as a result. For the Christian, EVERY day is holy, becuase Jesus is our Sabbath. We no longer have to "live for the weekend." Yes, let us honor the Sabbath....but let's work hard during the week so the Sabbath will seem even more restful.
