Every time I come across the term Servant Leadership, I attribute it to those leaders who are trying to humble themselves so that they become approachable to the people looking up to them.
But what if God puts you in a position of leadership over those that are above you? What if God calls you to lead professionals in your church when you are a mere trained Pastor, according to their observation?
They drive to church and make it there in half an hour, smelling fresh and with a full stomach. You get there before they do after waking up before sunrise, catching two or three buses, and taking nearly an hour and a half on the road. You have to clean yourself up and change the smelly shirt before anyone else walks in. You have to nibble on your homemade sandwich in your bag, just in case you have to linger after the service with a parishioner who needs counseling.
Do you pray to God and ask him to upgrade you to their level, so you don't feel the embarrassment? Or do you trust God's judgment in allowing you to be the servant leader he wants you to be?
For a couple of months now, our bible study group has been studying the women of the bible. It is interesting to notice how Jesus and Paul interacted with women at any given time.
Technically Jesus and Paul were the commuting evangelists, and some of the women they met were wealthy women. That didn't stop Jesus and Paul from teaching about the Kingdom of God, and that didn't stop the women from listening and being baptized. Some even went to the extent of inviting their communities to come and hear the preachers. Some were instrumental in the foundation of churches, like Lydia in Philippi and Priscilla in Asia.
God leads us to do ministry in different geographical locations, at different seasons of our lives, sometimes away from home and luxuries, like Jesus and Paul. Sometimes the rich will share their wealth with us, as some of the women in Jesus and Paul's day did. God be praised.
But sometimes they will not; as in the day of Elijah when he had to be accommodated and fed by the ravens and the poor widow. Still, God be praised. It is all part of Servant Leadership.
Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young (or), but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12
