Am I there yet?

A child has been formed, expected or not
And God told me that it is mine
But right at this moment I just feel so ill
I can't picture nine months down the line
Am I there yet, God? My sickness has passed
I now have a neat little bump
But wait, now I'm bigger and have fat feet
I can't sit up straight, I just slump
The baby is here, it was so worth the wait
Such a beautiful, cute little doll
But why won't he sleep? Why does he cry?
My sanity is going awol
Am I there yet, God? We're in a routine
Feeding and naps are on time
But wait, now he's teething and screaming in pain
I can't settle this small child of mine
This toddler is fun with her curious ways
I love how she's started to crawl
But "Stop! No, get down!" She's climbing so high
And why is there pen on the wall?
Am I there yet, God? We've mastered the walk
My child's in control of her limbs
But suddenly, also, she's very strong-willed
And protests over the simplest of things
My little one is starting school
In their uniform standing so proud
But wait, now they're crying, they won't let me leave
And I'm the one sobbing aloud
Am I there yet, God? He loves his class
He skips into school each day
But wait, now they're grouping and leaving him out
Some children aren't letting him play
Now we are older and school is fine
Friendships formed, siblings may have come, too
But now they are growing and time is a test
Will core values always stay true?
Am I there yet, God? I no longer have babies
But teenagers - what a delight!
Only hang on a minute, who are they with? And where have they been all night?
Right, so my children are looking okay
They're kind and they all have good jobs
But wait, one of them has just been dumped
I hate hearing her anguished sobs
Am I there yet, God? Can I just relax? They're all settled or married, at last!
But wait, now a scan picture shows a new child
I'm a grandparent? Wow! That's come fast.
I'm realising now, after months and months
That maybe I'll never be "there"
For once you're a mother, you never switch off
You never stop showing you care
And with each day, a new challenge lies
A need that can only be met
By mothers, like us, who with God's help
Give children a strong safety net
So stay with me, God, as I carry this out
A role that you chose me to do
And be with my children, wherever they are
As I hand them over, to You!

This is a great piece. It's a different job being a parent of each age, including grown kids. It doesn't ever end. I noticed a few verses where the pronouns don't match (you start with a he or she then switch to they). If you tweak it some, I bet you could find a home for this in a parenting magazine.
