Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. Acts 13:1-3 NIV
The Holy Spirit let the prophets who were praying know to set aside Barnabas and Saul, as they were being called to ministry by the Spirit.
First here, we see the importance of prayer. If we earnestly pray the Holy Spirit shall direct our actions to that which we are to do. There is much work to do for the advancement of God’s kingdom, and the Spirit knows that which we need to do. Don’t ever lose sight of the importance of prayer.
Secondly, we note the calling of Barnabas and Saul. We must remember that we are also called by the Holy Spirit. Don’t fret over what you need to do. Submit yourself to the Holy Spirit, and you shall be directed to that which you need to do. There are many things which can be done to advance the kingdom of God, and the Holy Spirit knows how to utilize your gifts. Consider yourself truly blessed to be called to this work.
