"How great is the love the Father has lavished on us." 1 John 3:1
As a child I watched, "I Dream of Jeannie." Larry Hagman played the part of astronaut, Major Nelson who found a genie that could grant wishes with the blink of an eye. Nelson could have wished for material possessions, riches, fame, whatever he wanted to make his life comfortable, yet he chose not to. Whereas his friend, Major Healey made the most of any opportunity to gain worldly comforts. By the time the series ended Nelson and Jeannie have fallen in love and married, but Jeannie knew he loved her for who she was, not what she could do for him.
God has the power to grant any of our wishes even to the extent of riches and fame. Solomon asked for wisdom and knowledge. God granted his request but also gave him wealth, possessions and honor. God does want to bless us, but more than that he wants us to love him for himself and not for what he does to make our lives comfortable. Isn't that the way we want to be loved? I want to be appreciated for what I do, but loved for who I am.
Perhaps this is why our prayers don't always get easy, comfortable answers and our lives are not always stress free. A predictable God who makes our lives comfortable and easy may have many followers but would we really love him? Our free will is vital. God is looking for those who freely, without coercion or bribery, choose to love him for himself, not for what he does.
