Faith
There are focal points placed along the road that we travel in life that offers and brings along with it different circumstances. Some may take the wind completely out of our sails whereas other points may bring about such wondrous and momentous joys that never happened before. When we weigh the scales as to which part is greater in dominating our days, we can safely choose on the happy side of the scale to out balance the unsteady side of troubles.
But even during the trying times, we can choose to be happy and persevere in prayer to collect graces to keep us going when the tornado sets in. We will then not be afraid at all for we know that we lived and made use of every moment to the best that we could do so.
There is a beautiful quote on the Rose which says it all; “You can learn from the Rose flower how to live in the moment. Right now the flower is dancing in the wind, in the rain, unafraid, unconcerned for the future.By the evening the petals will wither away but who bothers about the evening? This moment and this dance is all there is.”
Well said! As long as we have God and his graces on our side, we too can dance uninhibited in the rain and not worry too much about the future because He is there holding us up, securely guarding over our lives and never leaving us.
In return we too have to stick to His side and never turn away. The moment we stray away, we let all the goodness slip through our fingers, the petals of grace fall to the ground and we are too pre-occupied to pick up these flowers filled with the scent of heaven to beautify our life.
We see in the Old Testament how the Lord is so hurt by the indifferences of His chosen people after having lavished all the glorious blessings on them. They forget him and turn to pagan Gods. God then calls on the Prophet Jeremiah and tells him to go, buy a linen belt and put it around his waist. Later he tells him to hide the linen belt in the crevice of a rock near Perath. After a few days he tells him to go and retrieve it from under the rock. When Jeremiah does so, he finds that the belt is completely worn out and useless. The Lord then tells him that this will be the state of the Israelites who forgot him to go after alien gods. He would ruin their pride and make them useless like the belt.
He decides to strike down his people until they return back to him in repentance and bitter tears for having turned away from Yahweh; their One and True Living God. As we read in Jeremiah 14:17; “"'Let my eyes overflow with tears night and day without ceasing; for the Virgin Daughter, my people, has suffered a grievous wound, a crushing blow.”
But later the Lord relents, his anger settles down and he gathers His people back into His arms for he can never disown or abandon them. He is a loving and merciful Father! From this we can surmise that as long as we live for the Lord, we will see His goodness both on this earth and in the land of the Living where there is no trace of death. To be constant in prayer and never let our faith diminish will take us to this beautiful place. To never lose hope in prayer or give up will ensure we reach Heaven undeterred.
As we read in the book of the Prophet Elijah on how he prayed that there should be no rain on the land for three and a half years and indeed it was so!
At the end of three years and six months, Elijah prayed again persistently for rain to fall on the land. He sent his servant seven times to the top of the mountain to check if there was any sign of rain. Six times the servant returned with a negative answer. Elijah kept persisting in his prayers each time round. The seventh time the servant came back and reported that he saw a cloud the size of a man’s hand. Elijah then tells King Ahab to mount his chariot and leave for a torrent of rain was expected to fall. It was just as he said! The sky burst forth and the rain pelted the land ending the famine of years.
If we wonder why did it take so long for Elijah’s prayer to receive an answer, we can only deduce that the key to a fruitful prayer is perseverance and building our Faith and Trust in God to a deeper level. If we receive spontaneous answers to our prayers, we may not grow so deep in our spiritual union with God. To enter into the closest intimacy with Him, we need to be fully involved in His will for us and accept His timing!
May we always comply with the laws of the Lord, meditate on His Word who is none other than Jesus Christ, place all our prayers into His Most Sacred Heart, know that He comes to us in the Eucharist in the same way as on that day in Calvary and eat of this banquet which is both of this world and out of this world well into the Heavenly Table of the Lord’s dwelling in the highest heavens where the Father, Son and Spirit will give us a taste of the Tree of Life and we can find Happiness at Their Right Side Forever.
