“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” (Proverbs 17:22 NIV)
My head was throbbing with a sinus headache, but I was not going to cancel my lunch plans with friends. When I arrived at the restaurant, three ladies greeted me with bright smiles and big hugs. We sat at the table and began laughing and reminiscing about our high school days. The conversation turned to serious topics, and one of the ladies spoke up boldly, saying that we needed to lighten up, enjoy life, and trust it all to Jesus. Her wise words silenced us for a moment, and then we all agreed she was right. The time I spent with my friends went by far too quickly. We said our goodbyes and promised to keep in touch. As I drove back home, it occurred to me that my headache was gone; I felt joyful and energized. Good fellowship and laughter were just what I needed.
Christ-centered fellowship is an important part of our Christian lives. It is a time to lift up Jesus, to encourage one another, and to pray for others. Laughter does us good and can help us through the hard times, but true and lasting joy comes from knowing Jesus. God never intended for us to carry our burdens alone, but to rely on Him for strength and guidance. We have this one life to live, so let us live it joyfully and trust our lives to Him.
Father, thank You for laughter and fellowship with other Christians. But most of all, thank You for the lasting joy found in Jesus that is not dependent on our circumstances. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
