Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:25-28 NIV
These words of Christ are definitely in opposition to that which the world teaches. The world tells us what we must do to get ahead in life. We must look out for self, provide for our own well-being. But Jesus tells us something quite different. If we wish to be great in God’s kingdom, we must not focus on self, but on others. We must be the servant of others, rather than seeking to be served. We don’t need to focus on our needs, as Christ will provide that which we truly need. We are to focus on the kingdom of God, and its advancement. We cannot do that if we are focused on self. Our effort must go in one place at the expense of the other.
Christ has told us that the first shall be last, and the last shall be first. Can you give up being first now that you might be made first in God’s kingdom? I pray the answer is yes. We must give up self and follow Christ. Remember, Christ did not come to be served, but to serve. And beyond that, He gave His life as a ransom for our salvation.
You will need to sacrifice, either in the here and now, or in eternity. Which will it be? Choose wisely.
