“And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” (1 John 5:11, 12 NRSV)
Jesus said: “I give them eternal life”. See John 10:28. Have you ever wondered what life means? Is it just the proper functioning of our physical organs? Yes, if we are talking about our earthly living. But we have two more types of life: Spiritual and Eternal. Let us go deeper into the mystery of this great and consequential truth and be prepared for eternity.
If you are learning about eternal life for the first time in your life, let me assure you that there is nothing incredulous about it; as it is told in the Word of God. You will never land in palaver if you study and learn the Bible.
The Eternal Son of God visited this planet and died a terrible death, rose up from the dead and went back to heaven. What Jesus did for us on the cross determines the extent of God’s love for us. You may be hearing of this great love for the first time in your life, and He loves you too. If you are a human, you are not unloved, but you have Christ who suffered physically and mentally just because of His love for you.
The separation of man from God because of disobedience pierced God’s heart. Now, the alienation of man from eternal life because of disbelief in what God has prepared for those who believe pierces the Holy Spirit who is the prime personality in leading us to Christ the Savior. God wants each one of us to be saved and receive eternal life.
Man is inept to save himself from sin, curse and hell. So God took the initiative. Undaunted by the rebellious sinful nature of man, it was impossible for God to give up on man. Instead God offered Himself as an atonement for our sins; though we were terrible sinners, Christ was handed over to the hands of cruel men to be crucified. Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23 and John 19 provide the historical account of Jesus’ crucifixion. The preceding chapters in each of the four gospels give us information and details of Christ’s glorious resurrection.
God was not sitting in heaven reprimanding us for our sinfulness; but He emptied Himself and came down in human flesh from the womb of a virgin who became pregnant through the power of The Holy Spirit. God can never ever hate His chef-d’oeuvre. My dear brothers and sisters, no matter how horrible you may have become; Christ loves you personally and He poured His blood for you on the cross. When you receive God’s love into your heart, you will become God’s child, God’s son, God’s daughter.
The doctrine of salvation or Soteriology is not a mere theological relic. In fact, the whole nature of God is manifested in Christ through His sufferings on the cross. People may impugn this free gift of eternal life and redemption by saying that man ought to do good deeds in order to go to heaven. Our impertinence regarding how God works out things is able to throw is into eternal hell; beware!
Denying God’s love is a crass reaction which will lead us to the place prepared for satan and his fallen angels. But if we make the attempt to receive Christ into our hearts, we will receive eternal life because He Himself is Eternal and Unchanging.
