‘Baa, Baa Black Sheep’
(Original Version from ‘Tommy Thumb’s Pretty Song Book’/Published c. 1744)
‘Bah, Bah, a black Sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes merry I have,
Three bags full,
Two for my master,
One for my dame,
None for the little boy
That cries in the lane.’
So sad that individuals bring shame to their families; they wear the label of black sheep.
What about the family of God?
“All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He opened not His mouth;
He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth (Isaiah 53:6-7 NKJV).”
I went astray; I was lost in sin, I left the protection of the Great Shepherd.
Jesus bore my sin, guilt and shame; He rescued me!
“So He spoke this parable to them, saying:
What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance (Luke 15:3-7 NKJV).”
