I may not be fully aware of all that happened in the life of the man called Billy Graham, but I view it as a life beautifully lived. I am pretty sure it was full of difficulties, mistakes, with their respective consequences. Most of us have matured enough to understand that life is not rosy, mistakes are bound to happen, but God’s patience, forgiveness, love, and grace is amazing and abundant. As I thought about him and the life he had lived, being blessed with a long-fulfilled life, I began to ask myself a few questions. Billy Graham was an Evangelist who proclaimed the Gospel of Christ. The first question I asked was why him? There are numerous uncountable opportunities the Lord grants His children. Being an evangelist with such a widespread ministry was one of them. So why was he given that opportunity? Well, I didn’t have an answer to this question and still don't. But all I know is that God chooses whom He chooses and calls whom He calls in accordance with His will and purpose. He is wise and sovereign in that way.
I quietly came to realise that I was asking the wrong question. It’s like reading the verse (talents) and asking why the first servant was given 5 talents and not the second servant. The understanding that I had received from that story shifted my focus to the fact that it's not about who gets what and why. It's about what you do with what you are given. In any case, that’s what you are going to account for. We are all provided with opportunities, we are usually more envious of the opportunities other people have and totally ignore what we have. These opportunities can be the most basic things, although very important especially when they are not available to everyone. Why did you get that opportunity to live one more day? Same for why you got the opportunity to educate yourself, get understanding and light on certain truths, be involved in certain ministries, and, have health and wealth. Now there is one thing I have learnt, we have also been chosen to have and do different things and fill particular positions. These are opportunities we can’t afford to waste it.
My second question was, how sure was he that what he spent his life doing something worthwhile? Everything he said and knew about God. How sure was he that it was true? He had come believe in it just like how I had come to believe in it. Was that enough to know that at the end, you were really going to meet Him, and it was all worth it? My response would be, Yes. God had revealed Himself to him in many ways just as He has graciously done with me and other children of God. There have been many instances in my life which can only be attributed to God. Healing, miracles, freedom from addictions, life transformation etc. There is one thing however that makes me certain that God exists and thus believe that setting aside my life to serve and draw others to Him is worth it. And that is, His ability to save us from sin. He alone can deliver us from bondage to the enemy and our sinful desires and cause us to live a life that is holy and full of satisfaction. No one and nothing can claim that. The joy, peace, satisfaction, love and fulfilment He provides in the midst of the chaos in this world is absolutely amazing. My life with and without Christ is an evidence of how real and true He is. This means His promises of eternal life is as real and true. We are blessed to be called, chosen and used by Him.
Lastly, I wondered how we all would want to look back on our lives. After 99 years while you sit in your chair and look back on your life, will we see a life wasted, lived for our own pleasure, or invested? Will it be a life lived to accumulate earthly pleasures? Oh, how beautiful it would be to look back and have tears roll down your face because all you can see is God and not you. And all others can see is God's grace and favour, where they cannot seem to explain or dissociate your life away from God. Because the life lived could not have anyway been possible without the doing of the Most High God. If that would be the case, then every day counts. Every opportunity is important and need not be wasted. All efforts should be centred on pleasing God and making Him known especially if we believe in the truth and the power of the Gospel. It's sad that we give the best of our years and strength to the world and the rest of it to the Lord. It's a wrong order if our lives would be overly meaningful. Instead of waiting to grow old to do something for the Lord we should live our lives fully pleasing Him each day.
I pray for the Lord’s mercy for each of us, that His grace would abound in our lives such that we would receive insights into that which the Lord God desires from us. May we be filled with the Holy Spirit and power to do as He desires that the name of our Lord will be glorified above every other name. In Jesus name, Amen.
