This is an attempt to encourage believers to continue in their faith. I think you all agree that sometimes due to sorrows and troubles, we even doubt the existence of God. As limited humans when things are not good we assume that there is no such person as God. But I pray that this article will strengthen your faith and motivate you to deepen your relationship with Him. So please read it carefully.
First, if God does not exist, how did the universe, the sky and all that is below it came into existence? Scientists may support Darwin’s theory of evolution and also the Big Bang Theory. But can they prove how each living organism came to live in its own suitable surrounding or habitat? If everything was made out of chance, or by itself, then how is it possible that fishes appeared suddenly in water bodies (and not on land!), plants came to existence with their roots deep under the soil, the earth revolves around the Sun in a determined axis and completes it exactly in one year, rotates around itself in 24 hours, each living organism gets its own proper food. Can it happen without a Supernatural Person, or an intelligent and powerful One we call God, that things came into existence and each of it also got its own daily materials to survive? Plants need nutrients from the soil and sunlight to survive. If both plants and their food support just simply came into existence without any Divine mastermind, then there arise two questions: How did the soil get the exact nutrients plants need? Or how did the nutrients that plants need came into existence on the exact place, soil, in which the plants live? Secondly, how did plants appear exactly on soil and not in any other place? (I know that there are marine plants but those plants are created in a way to exist under water, but I mean to say that every plant lives in its own suitable habitat, you cannot see mango trees underneath the sea!) All these facts assume that everything that exists and is in real has a method or rule to continue and there surely is a Divine Deity or Intelligence that brought this things and their method to survive, to reality. This Divine Person we call God placed mammals and birds on land, the fishes in the seas, makes rivers to flow, placed the Sun on the center of the Solar System, situated the Earth on the third place among the planets, created everything necessary and pleasant for each living creature. I think this is enough to prove that God exists.
Second, if God is not a Living God, how ever did life come into being? The existence of life itself proves that someone who has life in Himself gave life to His creatures. Science teaches us that our heart beats continuously, we breathe even when we are asleep, blood circulates in our body without a pause. But the question is, can all these activities happen automatically? No, someone has ordained the system of continuation of life in every single creation. He has made the above body functions to be activated and also the plants to prepare their food by photosynthesis, the Earth to complete its revolution around the Sun in one year, made the connection between light and eyes so that we could see physically with the help of physical light. No, these things cannot happen on their own. God created, He formed, He sustains and He is the Source.
Now before we look at the Scriptures how this great God created everything visible and invisible, let us look at some verses that describe to a little extent about this great God. First, a verse which tells of God’s eternal existence: “Before the mountains were born and before you created the earth and the world, you are God. You have always been, and you will always be.” (Psalm 90:2) Notice the words You have always been and the words You will always be. True as it is, God’s existence has no beginning and it will have no end. God existed before time. God existed even when there was nothing not even emptiness. Even when there was no place to place the universe, God existed.
The Bible tells how this self-existent God created the reality we see today: “For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.” (Psalm 33:9 ESV) “All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (John 1:3 ESV) Let’s get more deeper: “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers – all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Col. 1:15-17 NRSV) “He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word.” (Heb. 1:3a NRSV) These verses teach us that God created everything through His Eternal Son, Jesus Christ.
We all know that any structure or product needs planning and designing. So it is understandable that God’s creation also has a Master-Designer. How did God designed or planned the creation, and who made the blue print? We read: “The Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth – when he had not yet made earth and fields, or the earth’s first bits of soil. When he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the human race.” (Proverbs 8:22-31 NRSV) These verses teach us that God created wisdom at the very beginning. Christ is termed as the power of God and the wisdom of God in 1 Cor. 1:22. This does not in any sense mean that God created Christ. The only thing we must understand here is that God created, formed, shaped and designed everything through Christ.
“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.” (Isa. 40:28 NRSV) As stated earlier, my attempt in this article is to ignite in my readers a strong faith in the existence of God. Beloved, anything can come in life, but in midst of all the pains and joys, let us learn to trust in this great loving God. Let us believe in Him no matter what.
