When we understand friendship, we cherish friends. They are the people we share our deepest thoughts and secrets with. We’ve had the most laughs with them and watched each other cry, even cry together. A friendship where happiness is shared, counsel is given and one stands for another. A friendship where one’s strength complements the other’s weaknesses. Its amazing the kind of bonds that two unfamiliar people are able to share. God’s greatness is seen in HIS ability to create such amazing bonds. True friends are God’s messengers, people HE has set aside to be there for you and through whom HE stirs up laughter, joy and happiness in you. Through friendship, God enables you to see and enjoy the world in a whole new way. The Lord is able to teach us amazing truths and help us grow in HIM with the amazing friends HE gives us. God in HIS greatness formed friendship to draw people close to HIMSELF.
However, we often allow pride, unforgiveness and selfishness to ruin beautiful friendships. Beautiful bonds are broken up because we decide to watch and have the bonds totally broken instead of mending the cracks. Struggling through the many differences we may have as friends is very tough and we usually find ourselves letting go because it’s the easiest thing to do. But I have come to understand that going through the struggles actually makes the friendship more stronger and even more beautiful. But more importantly, I have grown to let go of the very things that stood in the way of a beautiful friendship as I held on to that friendship. And by doing that I have matured so much in the things of God exhibiting characters that are pleasing to HIM. We sometimes don’t know who we are in terms of how we act and react to certain things but friendships have a way of opening our eyes to certain truths we may not be ready to accept. And though we are often quick to point fingers and blame our friends for our actions or reactions we should rather look through a non-judgmental lens and determine our role in the situation. By doing this we may find that we are also guilty and this helps in the mending process.
Friendship is a beautiful garden to grow and mature in love not only for that particular friend but for everyone around us and for God as well. How beautiful is a friendship which has a bond woven with threads of love, forgiveness, honesty, kindness, trust and faithfulness and, stands the test of time and differences. A friendship where quarrels and disagreements are nothing but waves that lasts only for a while. One where the sharp edges of hatred, jealousy, bitterness and selfishness will be too blunt to destroy because these friends are themselves swords sharpening each other in the Christian walk. A friendship where each one is appreciated, cherished and loved as God is being glorified. I call this a friendship that which is brewed in the very throne room of God. I have this friendship and I know there are others who have it as well. This means this kind of friendship is possible if we hold onto the friendship instead of holding on to our selfishness and unforgiveness. Remember two hands can hold each other only when they are empty not when the palms are full of “stuff”. Our palms may be full of items that may be hurting the other who tries to put their palms in ours. That you may be holding on to some characters which hurt the other friend and you as well even if you refuse to accept it.
We should learn to let go and instead find moments where we tell our friends how much we cherish them. Let’s choose to thank God for our friends and celebrate friendship. Because truthfully, when the youthful age has passed by and old age has set in, hopefully you will still have your friend around and all the memories you both shared.
