Words fall like drops of rain
Our lips are like clouds
I say so many things
Trying to figure You out
But as mercy opens my eyes
My words are stolen away
With this breath-taking view of Your grace
I am speechless
I’m astonished and amazed
I am silenced by Your wondrous grace
You have saved me
You have raised me from the grave
And I am speechless
In Your presence now
I’m astounded as I consider how
You have shown us a love that leaves us
Speechless
So what kind of love could this be
That would trade heaven’s throne for a cross?
To think you still celebrate
Over finding just one who was lost
And to know you rejoice of us
The God of this whole universe
It’s a story that’s too great for words
I am speechless
I’m astonished and amazed
I am silenced by Your wondrous grace
You have saved me
You have raised me from the grave
And I am speechless
In Your presence now
I’m astounded as I consider how
You have shown us a love that leaves us
Speechless
Oh how great is the love
The Father has lavished upon us
That we should be called
The sons and the daughters of God!
We stand in awe of your grace
We stand in awe of your mercy
We stand in awe of your love
We are speechless
We stand in awe of your cross
We stand in awe of your power
We are speechless
Anyone who knows me, knows that shy, quiet and reserved are not words that are used to describe me. I’m one of those overly talkative people who often has to consciously tell myself to shut up and let someone else talk. Know anyone like that? But there is one thing that will leave me speechless … the awe of being in the presence of God.
I got a letter from a good friend recently. It was one of those that makes you want to cry when you read it because you can feel the pain in every word. It went like this:
“I feel like the world is pressing in today. Trying to understand! I am not sure I really know what God feels like. So many say they are aware of God being around them. I feel like I have missed something all my life. All I seem to feel is pain.”
My response says something about the types of things that make me feel like I’m in the presence of God. See if you can relate:
“Remember those times when you sang at church. You’d start singing and it was like the world just went away. You’d close your eyes and all you were aware of was the music and singing it to God ... that is God’s presence.
“Remember when you sit with your daughter to help her study. You look at her and listen to her and feel your love for her and nothing else matters … that’s God’s presence.
“Remember when you tuck your son in bed at night and sit with him to read a book for a while. Remember how he looks up at you (probably with his thumb in his mouth) just listening to you read as if there’s no one in the world that could read it better … that’s God’s presence.
“Remember when you used to sit on the edge of your bed with your guitar and play for hours. It didn’t mater what you played or whether you got it exactly right. It just felt good to play and sing … that’s God’s presence.
“Remember when you start to think inappropriate thoughts and you feel guilty and sorry for having 'gone there' in your mind … that’s God’s presence.
“Remember in church last week when you came in late and slid in next to your wife. Remember how she scooted over closer to you and laid her head on your shoulder because it gives her comfort and she wanted to comfort you … that’s God’s presence.
“Remember that the sun comes up every morning, even after the scary, threatening weather of yesterday. Remember the breeze blows and the trees bloom and looking out the window, you’d never know that people were running for shelter yesterday . . . that’s God’s presence.
“God is everywhere, in everything, passing out his love and blessings 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We just have to look to see it. Every kind word someone said to you, every pretty scene you’ve seen, every song you heard that touched you, every paycheck, every family dinner, every vacation day, every hug from your kids, every time your car starts, every time something makes you laugh, every time someone is ugly to you and you don’t retaliate, every smile you have, every friend you have … every EVERYTHING … that’s God’s presence.
“When you believe you are valued and loved by God, you realize that ‘every good thing comes from above’ and that God gives you more blessings each and every day than you can even count. When you start to focus on the blessings, you start to see God’s presence. When you start to see God’s presence, you start to feel it more and more … and appreciate it more … and want it more … and need it more.
“That, my special precious friend, is God’s presence … He loves you. He has given you so much and just wants you to see it. The way to be ‘up’ is to count those blessings, however small and insignificant they may seem. They’re yours … free gifts from God. Accept them and just say thank you.”
So much for being speechless, huh?
