I went with a few friends on a walk through what we all would confirm to be familiar woods.
Some of their children were working on a trail, and we were going to check on their progress if we could.
Their trail was for mountain biking, so even though it was distinct it was purposely left rough.
I noticed a pleasant looking trail cutting back from our former course, and it looked nowhere near as tough.
I mentioned to my companions, “Look at that trail, it looks nice, and it leads back toward home.”
They mentioned on the way back taking this nice little trail, and this little secret would be our own.
For a time it was pleasant enough, but lo, and behold it led directly to the back of someone else’s land.
To turn all the way around was too costly in time, plus all those cutting the trail would know the mistake made at our hand.
We turned hard to the left knowing in time we had to intersect the path that we earlier were on.
This way was very rough, at times steep, very thick, we had to walk bent over almost double it was so overgrown.
Finally we did emerge and by chance stumbled upon the place we were to turn into the woods and head back to the farm.
It was a practical lesson of leaving God’s path of safety for a way that seems right, even though this time was no alarm.
We all three were seasoned Christians, all three well versed in God’s Word, so we’re all familiar with verses like.
There is a way which seemeth right unto a man but the end thereof are the ways of death., I mused on this on this hike.
Yet I still fell prey to the snare. The children didn’t fall for it, every time they go they just simply stay on the path.
I need the Lord’s help daily as a child to be led in the right path of safety and rest, resisting the pleasant way of wrath.
When I got back to the farm I felt ashamed to even tell this simple story to my friends because of that hateful sin of pride.
However if simple analogies help keep some off a real path of destruction, then I must submit to God, and write.
You can sincerely think you know something, have good intentions, be full of knowledge, yet veer from the way.
It makes no difference to your arch enemy, for our adversary as a roaring lion seeks some to devour as prey.
There are ways that ever so slightly lead you away from foundational truths on which you’ve built your Christian life.
Sadly most don’t get on these paths by themselves too many times it’s the husband, all the children, and the wife.
If you will heed God’s Law he will direct your path, his way is satisfying as he has made all things for his children to richly enjoy.
Remember, He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.
I was once in a fellowship of fools, some of them were destroyed, why I wasn’t certainly was no merit of my own.
I remember the Lord offering to lead me on his path, and along the way he’s promised to guide me safely all the way home.
