the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. And all people will see God’s salvation.’ Luke 3:2b-6 NIV
It was time for the short ministry of John. Herein we see John fulfilling the prophecy contained within Isaiah 40:3. The baptism with water was an outward symbol of the inner repenting which needed to occur within the individual for the remission of sin. John truly was a voice which came out of the wilderness, for that is where he lived. John told those who came to him that they must repent. They must have a change in heart if they wanted to be forgiven of their sins.
John truly did prepare a way for the Lord to come. Those who truly listened to John were thus prepared, and ready and needing a Savior.
Is not our mission today as was John’s? Do we not “prepare” the way for the Lord to come to others, Are not the words we speak of Jesus to others to help prepare their hearts for receiving a Savior and Lord? Our focus must totally be on preparing for Christ. It is all about Christ, and not about us. We are His chosen vessels. We are to be molded and used as He sees fits, not as how we wish. We must let Christ, through the Holy Spirit direct us in the manner and way He wants us to serve Him.
We are here today and gone tomorrow. But, Christ is here forever. Our names will fade from memory, but Christ will not. It is truly all about Christ and not about us. He must increase as we must decrease. We have our all in Him!
