Robin Williams. 1953-2014
There's been an incredible amount of sadness surrounding the tragic death of Robin Williams. And I have definitely felt it too. Back in the days when we used to have to rent a huge VHS player, and a couple of movies, my kids were young and entirely entertained by "Mrs Doubtfire" and "Hook", just to name a couple of iconic Robin Williams movies. In fact my father in law, who had an incredible insight into child entertainment, for years phoned my daughter Megan, with a perfect Mrs Doubtfire voice. From an early age, "Mrs Doubtfire" called Meggy, on every birthday and Christmas, leaving her 100% convinced, that 'she' had just called.
Both my kids were genuinely disturbed by the sudden passing of Mr Williams. And were even more disturbed by the nature of his death. It's reported that Robin Williams was discovered by his personal assistant, having hung himself hours before. It was also reported that Robin Williams had deliberate, but superficial slashes to his wrists.
Many things surrounding the suicide of Williams are still not known. But it's the facts surrounding his suicide that will remain indelibly, the most unsettling. Lost in all the news reports and troubling commentaries is the most important question of all : Where is Robin Williams now ? No matter whether you are Atheistic, Agnostic, or Creationist, the question must inevitably enter your mind :Where is Robin Williams now ? *. *. *. A lot of people roaming this earth, have dreadful lives. Whether lonely, drug addicted, physically ill, friendless, financially broke, heartsick, mentally ill, Spiritually empty, the list is inexhaustible. Every single one of these conditions, could easily result in hopelessness and acute depression. For depression and mental illness are in no way respecters of persons. Anyone, from anywhere, rich or poor, could unexpectedly encounter depression, hopelessness, desperation, which left untreated and/or unaddressed, could easily wind up in the same situation that Robin Williams was found : wrists unsuccessfully slashed, while the belt around his neck had served its purpose, successfully asphyxiating himself. *. *. *.
No one knows the heart of Robin Williams. No one but he and God, knows where he stood in terms of eternity. But make no mistake, for it is much more significant to consider where he is now, as opposed to what he accomplished during the span of his life. For in the reality of eternity, within the context of Scripture, all of us, whether saved or lost, will inevitably line up to meet Jesus face to face. 1 John 3:32 says that when we see Him, we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is. But not so for the Unbeliever. At least not yet. For as the unbeliever chooses to live their lives separated from God, so shall be their eternity. *. *. *.
I believe that God has availed Himself to every man and woman, one way or another, at some point or another within the course of their lives. I also believe that it is highly incumbent on every rational person, to exhaust every single avenue available, in an effort to come to grips with their own mental shortcomings. For no man is an island unto himself. We don't live, any of us, outside of Gods foreordained will. But as long as we draw breath, we are welcome open armed, by a Saviour that longs to turn our focus on Him, and away from the hopelessness in this world. *. *. *.
Where is Robin Williams now ?Does any other query really matter? In the context of eternity, does anything he accomplished in his life, that didn't include building the Church in an effort to win souls for Christ, really matter? Does anything outside of his personal relationship with God, have eternal ramifications?
For the Gates of Hell and the Doors to Heaven, stand side by side. A simple doctrine, on which the strength of Christianity is based, says that all of those ( i.e. Psalms 3:4 ) that are unrighteous ( never having accepted Christ ) , will never gather with Him, in the assembly of the Righteous. To celebrate so enthusiastically, Robin Williams life, while at the same time, never once considering his post death scenario, is to me the epitome of short-sightedness. *. *. *. I have been witness to three men as they passed from this world into eternity. Two were enthusiastic servants of The Lord, and the ease with which they passed from this world and into the presence of God, was encouraging to say the least. The third, a man I truly loved, fought his way out of this dimension and into the next, kicking and struggling, desperate to avoid his fate. The lack of peace in his room was palpable, as he drew his last ragged breaths, before succumbing to his death. The eternity he faced, in the moments before he passed, was clearly unsettling. And the ones he left behind, that stood and watched him pass, were hysterical in their grief, with no hope of seeing him again. *. *. *. Where is Robin Williams now?
