DISTRACTIONS, CLOG IN THE WHEEL OF PROGRESS

Most, if not all of us have goals and aspirations in life. We have a project that we are involved in, something that will benefit us in the short or long run. Something that requires our utmost attention, our concentration and efforts.it is like a journey for us.
But then, along the line, so many issues and stuffs come up that try to get our attention and shift our focus on the project we are in involved in. Whatever comes in this form is simply a ‘distraction’.
The first of the three meanings of Distraction according to the Encarta dictionaries is something that diverts attention; something that takes away concentration or takes away from something else. Anything that interrupts, interferes or disrupts your focus qualifies as a distraction.
At this juncture, let me state categorically that distraction is not necessarily a bad thing, it is not necessarily a negative influence, in fact it could be something that is good but at that point in time is not needed by you, hence it becomes a distraction. Distraction, therefore is WHATEVER - positive or negative, that will not contribute meaningfully to, or slow down an ongoing project and therefore is not needed by an individual or a group at a certain point in time while being involved in a project.
Distractions could come from both internal and external sources. Internal when the factors are from within oneself, for instance, a student in an examination writing a 3-hour paper is not likely to want to sleep, though he really feels likes sleeping. At least, not in the exam hall because it will interfere with his examination. A doctor in the theatre room, operating a patient is not likely to want to eat his lunch right there and then, despite being hungry because it will simply reduce his concentration. The factor is external when another thing or person is bringing the distraction. For instance, a student receiving a call on his phone, or chatting with his mobile phone during a lecture is simply being distracted by the phone. A person praying to God right where the Television or Radio is switched on and a favourite programme is on is simply being distracted.
Generally speaking, Friendship, watching television, listening to radio, eating, sleeping, social media and internet usage, playing etc. could qualify as distractions depending on what project you have at hand. However, the truth is, Distractions of any kind is not only harmful but unwanted and capable of terminating a project. Hence, it is very necessary not to allow any form of distraction.
As an individual or group engaged in any project, the first step in overcoming distractions is to make a conscious choice not to be involved in any other thing that is capable of slowing you down. Before you commence any project, make up your mind not to allow anything get into your way. Remember if you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything. Stand against distractions.
The second step is to maintain your stance when you start the project. Opportunities to be distracted will certainly arise during any project, but since you have made up your mind not to allow them, you should now stand your ground when the distractions come practically, irrespective of their sources either internal or external. If it is a fairly long or extended project, the tendency is that the distractions will appear several times in different forms but you should not allow your stance to be weakened. Stay focused.
The third step is to try to accomplish any goal or project on time, in fact, try to complete it before the normal time (if you can). It is when you stay unnecessarily too long on a project that your resistance to distractions is weakened therefore, do what you will do on time and move on.
The fourth step is to identify your areas of weaknesses while in a project and try to work on it so that distractions don’t overcome you from that angle. Whatever you are weak at does not mean you are helpless, it means you have to put in more effort to withstand that thing.
Finally, always commit your plans and goals to God. He is the only one that can help you stand against distractions successfully.
Whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing well. Distractions are what will not make you do what you are supposed to do well. Distractions are clogs in the wheel of one’s progress. They can slow you down or even terminate a project if you allow. Therefore, whatever venture you are involved in, know and remember that there is a time to focus and a time for pleasure. When you emphasize pleasure at the expense of focus, you will sacrifice your project on the altar of termination. Distractions should not overcome you. It is up to you to choose.
