Heavenly Faith by M.C. Syben
Allison cherished living in Heaven. Always sickly as a child, she was freed of her wheelchair at twelve and released from Earth’s limitations. In Heaven, she cartwheeled, back flipped, and did that which had been impossible for her in life.
Although everyone enjoyed basking in God’s glory for eternity, other options existed above too. Looking for a new outlet for her helping nature, Allison wished for a change.
“I want to help kids on Earth that are like I once was,” she volunteered.
An officiate smiled. “You must become a deputized angel to step back into the Earth realm. Even then, your powers will be temporary and must recharge here often. Let’s see if you qualify to join an angelic ranking.”
“I have to qualify?”
“Oh, yes,” the officiate smiled as he gleamed information through the knowledge base. “Allison, you had a caring temperament while alive. Here in Heaven, you run errands, sing songs of praise, and carry our code of joy at all times. Yes, you may enter the Angelic Deputy program. Class starts immediately.”
Allison stood perfectly still as knowledge poured into her spirit. A few Rules of Conduct included never appearing in physical form while on Earth, always relinquishing duties to higher Angels when required, and never imparting any knowledge of the future. Strength and hope were the only gifts she carried to children in need but she knew those traits could mean all the difference in their healing.
Humbly, Allison bowed her head as she received an energy halo that would allow her to impart those gifts to sick, mortal children whom the Heaven’s appointed to her. She began her new work immediately.
Sometimes she surrounded her charges with love so that hope could grow. Sometimes, she blew strength into their weakened spirits. As warned, when her spiritual energy would inevitably diminish, she returned to Heaven’s dominion to revitalize. The daily commute interrupted her progress and continuity with patients. She flustered with keeping balance.
Heavenly bystanders offered well-intended advice.
“You must reduce your work load, Allison.”
“You’ve taken on too much, dear.”
Allison listened to the sage advice. She did go all-in with her volunteer work. But, then, she envisioned her years of confinement. Although recollections no longer hurt emotionally, she remembered watching others play, always on the outside of frolic and on the inside of a hospital for tests.
She loved her patients—each and every one. “I need council,” she thought. Before she slipped through the haze to Earth, Allison bowed her head and prayed. “Father, you know I’m happiest helping. Please don’t lessen my work load. Instead, I want to assist more kids who need you most. If it is your will, please make it possible.”
Allison felt a jolt as angels appeared and replaced her first halo with a superior one, earning a higher ranking as a deputy angel. She smiled a glorious “thank you.” Faith produced big results in heaven too.
Her once-skeptical onlookers fell contritely to their knees, praising “With God, all things are possible” while a magnified Allison, triple back-flipped and with angelic-like skill, flew over their heads, through the veil.
