The skies where overcast, cold and damp. The wind, coming out of the east, added to the chill in the air. Tyjohn, a big man with a rugged aging face, pulled his leather trench coat a little tighter around him. He looked down from the top of the hill at the makeshift prison erected just outside the city.
The prison was more of an extermination camp than a prison, he thought, as in the days of the Nazis. Tyjohn knew this day would come, having lived a long life and seeing the growing animosity toward Christians. He tried to warn other Christian, but to no avail. They just wanted to sit behind their white picket fences, believing everything would be all right, that it would all work out in the end. It’s not that bad, they would say.
The signs were subtle. First, the Bible not being allowed in schools, followed by a banning of even the mention of God. Then they took anything that resembled God out of all government buildings. This move led to all kinds of perversion. No longer was there a right or wrong. Morality came to an end.
All that was left were groups of Christians, who were hiding, for it was forbidden to publicly worship God, much less mention God in public. It led to outlawing God completely to the point where being caught with a Bible was considered a capital crime, punished by hanging.
This punishment is what Tyjohn was secretly watching from the hilltop. He saw three men and two women being lead out to the gallows. They were stopped as each came to the platform and lead up the stairs. The executioner put a rope around each one neck. As he finished the last one, the warden of the jail came out and read the charges against them and punishment by hanging. When finished, he looked up at the executioner and nodded. With that the executioner pulled the lever, the floor dropped from underneath the prisoners. The sentence was completed.
This brought tears of sadness to Tyjohn as he watched, for there were some of his friends in this group that had carelessly been caught. He thought about this as he turned and hurriedly walked away before risking being spotted, heading back to the hideout. Tyjohn would never have guessed that his love for God would put him on the government’s top ten most wanted list.
