Harvest Time by Karen Pourbabaee
“ A man will always reap just the kind of crop he sows.” Galatians 6:7 Living Bible
The crispness in the air tells us fall is here. A sign of hope that harvest is nearing. Where I grew up in south Louisiana that meant following slow moving trucks hauling the sugarcane harvest to the mills. I certainly never expected anything but sugarcane to sprout from the endless rows of soil on my grandfather’s sugarcane farm. God brought the rains to water the seed and sunshine to spur the growth. As I was growing up I still recall my father cutting down and peeling a few sugarcane stalks during harvest time for me and my siblings; we chewed on the pulp, extracting the sweet juice. We tasted the goodness of the harvest and saw God’s faithfulness in the seasonal ebb and flow of planting and harvest.
Galatians chapters 5 and 6 are entitled “Exhortation to Christian Living”. Paul was teaching the church in Galatians the path to goodness in life. Our work in life is to sow good seed. God asks us to plant it and remain faithful. What kind of seed? The answer is found in the parable of the sower in Mark.
“The sower sows the word.” Mark 4:14 NAB
The Word of God is an imperishable seed that we can sow in good faith. (1 Peter 1:23) It cannot be destroyed and will produce a good harvest in our lives. Mark 4 illustrates that those who hear the Word and accept it bear fruit thirty, sixty, and even a hundredfold! But when we hear the Word, we must also accept the Word. To accept is active; from the Latin it means “to take”. From the Law profession it implies “to receive with intent to retain and adopt”. We must aggressively take the Word and make it a part of us. Adopt it. Then we may sow it in our lives and in the world about us. Only then can we gather a harvest.
We reap what we sow, we gather what we plant…the harvest of His word , our prayers, kindness, love, compassion…every goodness imaginable is a seed to be planted.
“Let us not grow tired in doing good, for in due time we shall reap our harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9 NAB
The harvest comes in God’s time, not ours. Don’t give up. Don’t stop praying. Don’t stop doing the goodness contained in the living active Word of God. Keep the faith and taste the goodness of the harvest!
Lord, keep me faithful in the waiting times of life, for Your harvest time is sure to come. Amen.
