‘How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called the children of God! And that is what we are.’ 1 John 3:1(NIV)
The Holy Scriptures claim that we are the beloved sons and daughters of God. We are not what we do, we are not what we have, nor are we what others say about us. We are instead the beloved brethren, children of God. Indeed our entire identity is measured not by a standard grounded in this world, but in another world – God’s Heavenly Kingdom. God’s appraisal, ‘You are my beloved’ is who we are, nothing less.
Think about that for a little longer. We do not amount to what we own, whether that be much or little, either in the past, right now or in the days to come. We are more than our possessions. We are not valued by what others say of us – whether that be compliments and accolades or criticism and slander. Words spoken over us will never shape who we really are. And we do not consist of what we do. Whether we have achieved much in our lifetime or little, it is of no consequence. Instead our identity is etched in something far deeper, far grander, far more hopeful and far more lasting than all these added together. Do we know who we really are?
We are a beloved child of God (2 Thessalonians 3:13), chosen before the creation of the world (Ephesians 1:4), for His inheritance (Psalm 33:12). Listen to His voice. ‘You are my chosen child. You are my beloved. My favor rests on you.’ This is enough. This is all we need. Take a few moments and allow yourself to hear these words resonate deeply within. Move from knowing in your head, to believing and feeling theses promises in your heart – your choseness, your uniqueness.
Rejoice! For in this privileged position we will not only recognize our own favor, but celebrate the same in others. For their chosen position, their uniqueness given by God does not diminish from ours. We are each individually special and valued to him. In our belovedness we are truly equal and accepting of one another’s worth. When we understand who we really are, only then can we clearly see others not from the world’s perspective, but from God’s.
Are we living from this truth? God chose each one of us, welcomed us, and called us his beloved daughter, his beloved son. Live expansively in this reality. Let it transform who we are. Live so passionately in this identity that it will touch others in such a way, that they might hunger to live from this place too.
Reflective Moments
Where is my identity grounded? What might God be asking of me just now? Discover the promises God has spoken in His Word about those He has chosen. The Psalms in particular declare God’s words of favor towards His chosen ones. Settle into a time of silent prayer with my Heavenly Father. Saying the words, ‘I am His beloved’ or ‘I am chosen’ might be a useful way to draw close to God and let go of mind distractions. Gently repeat these words allowing my thoughts and heart to settle back with God again. Do not rush. Enjoy this quiet spacious time with Him.
