Things That Go Bump In The Night
James R Fulton
Author requests article critique
I believe it all boils down to this - it's not so much of what we are seeing, as it is what we're being told.
I had a tape on the subject of "UFOs and Christianity". I say had because I played it a lot and it eventually went the way of all cassette tapes, got wound too tight and had to throw it out. Anyway, the tape was on a talk given by the author of the book, "The Kingdom of the Cults", the late Dr. Walter Martin, and on the tape, Dr. Martin admitted to seeing a UFO. Now, the talk wasn't so much about the existence of UFOs, although he did mention some things that our government has done in order to deal with the subject and he did talk about the UFO's that buzzed Washington DC in the early 1950's - some of you are old enough to remember that; but he was more interested in those that claimed to be visited by aliens from another planet and what the message was that they were told to pass on. Most of the time the message was one that denied Christ and talked of love, peace and god being inside yourself.
On a personal level, I liked Walter. I had the privilege to see him on two occasions at Rolling Hills Covenant Church in Rolling Hills, CA. And I got to talk to him for about five minutes or so on a totally different subject - the man knew his stuff. Anyway, he never claimed to be a scholar, he was a teacher at heart and he had all the qualities of a good teacher - he knew his subject well, he was funny, witty in his presentation of the subject, he was friendly, but most of all, he had the love of Jesus with him and he wasn't afraid to share it with you or warn you of what will happen to you if you keep rejecting God's love - as he learned from an old black preacher - "brother, if they keep rejecting Jesus's love, remind them of the law of Moses"
Back to UFOs and other mysteries of life. I have a funny way of looking at things and if I ever questioned myself on certain truths, I go back to a short list of sure things that I know: God is still on the throne, Jesus's love trumps everything and Judy and I still love each other. These things I know are true. Then there are things that the jury is still out on, UFOs and ghosts being two of them. Like what Walter said, I'm more interested in those that don't have a horse in this race; they are the ones that will tell you what they saw. Not an interpretation of what it was or how it might fit into the Bible. They see something that cannot be understood at the present time and they are mystified by it and tell you - "I saw something that I can't really identify other than it defies my logic"
Why am I talking about this particular subject today? The Bible is clear that it doesn't mention a thing such as UFOs and as for ghosts, the Bible does mention that during the only séance mentioned in the Bible (1 Samuel 28) where Saul goes to the witch of Endor to seek help from Samuel, and when Samuel comes back from Abraham's bosom, he tells Saul that he and his sons are going to die the next day in battle (1 Samuel 28:16). So we have a séance where nothing good comes from it, except the death of the royal family - so maybe it's not so good of a thing to consult with séances and Ouija Boards and other forms of communication with dead things. Nevertheless, there are some great mysteries in life that the Bible doesn't mention. Does that mean that they aren't true? Well, no because people are seeing things that really have no other reasons than, "WOW! Look at that!" I've also heard that anything outside the parameters of the Bible text is from Satan and I don't really have a problem with that answer either, other than, why am I seeing it then?
Well, I have a story of what I saw about 9/10 years ago- Judy and I were heading to Riverside for one of my doctor's appointments. We were traveling down the 60 freeway and we just passed Watkins Drive when I happened to look in the direction of Orange County and there I saw this thing hanging in the air. It was rectangle in shape with hard edges. Metallic in color and the sun was shining off it. I pointed it out to Judy and she watched it for a while and said, "It's not moving." and I took my eyes off it and continued to drive to our destination. What did we see? I don't know. Even to this day, I don't know what it was and Judy doesn't remember it. She doesn't deny it happening, she just doesn't remember seeing it. Did this thing frighten her to the point where she put it out of her memory? Perhaps. Things like this can be quite unnerving to some people.
So as a Christian, how do I respond to these anomalies in life? If someone comes to me and says - "well, you know UFOs don't exist." I'm going to say - "I don't know that because I think I saw one" And then again, someone comes telling me about Ezekiel's wheel within a wheel being a classic description of a UFO. I would respond with "You can't say that because forcing your perspective into the text is not a true biblical way to study the bible." The best explanation I've found for Ezekiel's wheel is the Apostle Paul's answer in 1 Corinthians 13:12 "For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I am also known." Sometimes things from the spiritual world can't be explained in the physical world even though they are seen in a physical manifestation and the best answers we can come up with is what our finite minds are telling us.
I try to live a God centered reality - everything is accountable to God and everything flows from God - so God ultimately knows everything and isn't surprised by anything. And I think that's where we need to start our search at - of things that deal with UFOs, ghosts and other things that go bump in the night. And maybe some of you have seen things that made you think, "was that what I think it was?" let me also remind you that seeing something like an UFO or ghost or Bigfoot or the Lochness monster or the creature from Lake Perris is not a sin. It won't cause you to lose your salvation. I understand human nature to want to know what it was - curiosity is often the key to great adventure - so maybe it's time to seek God and his wisdom and counsel to start a great adventure.
Mostly though, I believe it comes back to what Walter said - what is the message and who is getting the credit. Some who claimed to be abducted by aliens have said that the message is usually of love and peace that they are being told. Others who have claimed to see ghosts have said that some ghosts had led them out of danger into a safe place. Nothing wrong with love and peace or leading you to a safe place away from danger, but who's making the claim and who gets the glory? Especially if it's followed up with something that goes against what the Bible says about who God is; we know then that the message is from another place other than God's throne and shouldn't be trusted.
