Brother and Sister:
One of the 'brothers' that we see in the Bible is Cain-Abel. It is written in the book of Genesis 4:1,2 "And Adam knew Eve as his wife; and she concieved, and bare cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground." And it is written that "in the process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and his offering. But unto Cain and to his offering He [ The LORD] had no respect." Genesis 4:3-5a.
So because of this Cain was downcast and was furious. The LORD said to Cain, "Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him." Genesis 4:6,7.
Now Cain grew jealous of his brother Abel. 'And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. And the LORD said unto cain, "Where is Abel thy brother?" And cain said, " I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?". And the LORD said, "What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand; When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.".'Genesis 4:8-12.
Let us now think for ourselves, how many of us are like Cain? If we grow jealous of our brother, it is wrong. If our parents (or someone ekse) asks, "Why is your brother doing this wrong thing?". We should not say to them, "Am i my brother's keeper? Go tell him.". Let us consider this: our brother/sister is given us by the LORD. It is He who gave you your brother/sister. So, in sibling relationships, it does not matter who is victorious. Just as Christ said to Peter (who asked Jesus the number of times he should forgive his brother or sister when he/she sins against him) "not seven times but seventy-seven times" Matthew 18:22.
Let us observe three things between our brothers and sisters:
(1) sacrificial behaviour:
Let us abound in love with one another (1 Thess 3:12). Let us give to our brethren what they like. Let's not say, "I can't give this to you.". Let's start saying, "If you want this, i will give it to you.". Let's start the love of sacrificing things to our brethren. We should not be like Cain. We should have a mind of sacrifing things for our brethren.
Love should be sincere. Hate what is evil and cling to what is good (Romans 12:9). Let us not hate one another but do good instead of evil. Repay evil with good. Remember, Christ died for us while we were still sinners (or, while we were still His enemies, Christ died for us). Greater love hath no one than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13). Thus Jesus Christ gave His life so that we may live. Let us learn from the LORD (our Elder Brother) how to love our enemies and neighbours (friends and brethren).
(3)Who is my neighbour? :
I think that all of us know the story of the good samaritan. There is no good explanation of who our neighbour is, than this:
(from Bible Gateway)
The Parable of the Good Samaritan
25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”
27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”
29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’
36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”
Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” Luke 10:25-37
This is how we ought to show our brotherly love. Not only to our brethren but also to our neighbour.
Just like Christ gave His life for us, we also ought to love one another. For he said, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as i have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." John 13:34-35
So let us ask GOD ALMIGHTY to strengthen us with His HOLY SPIRIT, that we may love our brethren and neighbour as ourselves.
Our Father in Heaven, please forgive us for our rebellious acts and for our transgressions against your commandment. I ask you LORD to please empower us by your POWERFUL HOLY SPIRIT so that we may love our brethren and neighbour just as ourselves. Yet 'not as i will, but as THOU wilt'. Help us to walk in the way Christ JESUS established, so that when HE returns, He may bring us Home. Father i ask you in the name of your Son and in the name of our LORD and SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST, to please forgive us and guide us in your way.
Amen benediction and glory, wisdom and all thanksgiving, honour and power and might belongs to you forever and ever.
