The year 2011 has been a good year from me, many things happened, some planned and some came unexpectedly. All I can say is that God still cares for me. He did some marvellous work in 2011 that I am going to share with you.
In January, I was in my second year at College, Cambridge Regional College, studying health and social care. It is that time of the year that we start sending our ukase applications for university and start being called for interviews and the like. To tell you the truth, at first I did not want to go to university soon after finishing college. Why? , because I wanted to take a gap year and go the year after. I was thinking I would invest in myself in that gap year , i.e. get a job , driving license , do a baking course (as I love baking), get into the music industry , visit my home country, Zimbabwe . All these ideas were floating in my head as to how I should go through the gap year. However, all that was in vain. After talking to many people, everybody advised me to go to university soon after college. They encouraged me to do so because the laws of the government were changing and we could start paying for tuition fees. However, now, nursing courses were NHS funded.
After thinking about what everybody said, I decided that it was a good idea to go to university .So I started filling the UCAS applications. It was a long process but there was enough support to carry me through it all. I sent the forms and within a few weeks, I received a notification letter saying that they have received my application and its now in process. I was so excited and was hoping to get interview invites as soon as possible. My first interview was at Anglia Ruskin University, which is actually the closest university to where I live. I prepared myself before the interview by researching everything related to nursing, asking my friends what type of questions I should expect and be prepared to answer them in the interview. It was late winter, sometime in March. I travelled to the university by train and then bus. I was a bit late to the university because neither the bus driver nor I was sure which bus stop to get off for the right location of the interview.
All went well in the interview and I was very confident that I did my best to secure myself a university place. To my disappointment, the interview was not a success. Nevertheless, I did not lose hope because I still had four other interviews to attend.
Bedford University did not even call me for an interview because I did not have a certificate copy of my GCSE/O level results. I only had a small slip because when I left Zimbabwe, the certificates were not out yet so I could not collect one.
I was called for an interview at the University of Hertfordshire. that was my first choice actually because I heard that it was one of the best nursing universities in the country and also I live in Hertfordshire , although the university is a bit further from my home .I went for the interview on the 2nd of March 2011 (by train). I did a numeracy and literacy test and then 1:1 interview, only to find out one week later that I did not get in. I was so disappointed but kept looking forward to more interviews, maybe something might come up.
I kept praying to God about it because I was determined to get into university. It was getting embarrassing because I had told people that I am going for interviews and they obviously would ask me about the results, which were not very pleasing to say.
I went for more and more interviews. Added more applications but nothing came up. I was losing hope now. I thoughts maybe my first instinct was right. Maybe I should just drop the application and go for the gap year idea instead. I was ruminating about this and weighing my options and I still did not know what the best thing to do was.
I finished college and got very good, (actually excellent +++ grade. DDM, Distinction Merit. I was very pleased with the results and the work I put through to get such high marks. However, I was still wondering why I am not getting anything while I have such high grades .I had 380 UCAS points and the average to get a university place is 180 points.
I went through clearing, some universities were promising but never got back to me or they said the course is full. Oh, my goodness is there anything out there for me! I wondered. I finally got in touch with two universities that sounded so promising, Hertfordshire University and Arbetey Dundee. However, they were offering a different course, mental health nursing whereas I initially applied for adult nursing.
I spoke to the facilitators at Arbetay Dundee and they offered me an interview over Skype. That was different for me compared to being used to face-to-face interviews .I accepted the offer but the Skype on my computer was not working properly, I had to use my dad's phone. The interview was brilliant and they offered me a place right away. I was so happy, finally after all my struggles. However, there was a problem. The university was opening in two weeks time and I had to look for private accommodation and move down to Scotland. That was a tough decision to make and financially it was impossible for me. I just wanted to get myself into university but the thought of going to Scotland, 8 hours away from home and the Scottish weather. It was hard to bear.
I kept praying to God and my family prayed for me. Surprise, I got an email from the university of Hertfordshire inviting me for an interview on Monday. Oh my days, what should I do? I have already accepted a place at arbetay Dundee but there is no provision for it. By the way, I have been to the University of Hertfordshire before for an interview and was not successful. How can they call me again for yet another interview? Anyway, it was my first choice; maybe God had some plans for me.
I went for the interview and two people turned up for the interview. The interview went well but I was very nervous because that was my last chance. After the interview, the interviewers asked me to leave the room. A few minutes later, they called me back into the room. You can guess what the interviewers told me, I passed the interview and I got a place at UH, my first choice. The course will be starting on 26 September 2011. That was music to my ears. I could not stop smiling, I have receives the best news at the right time. I could not wait to share the news with my family and friends. I was just filled with joy and relief. Finally, finally, Yeh it is me. I thank the Lord for hearing and answering my prayers.
The lessons I have learnt from this whole experience
1. Seek God in everything you do.
2. It is advisable to seek advice from other people about what is best option at that moment in time.
3. Weigh the pros and cons of the options you have before making a decision.
4. Never lose hope, keep trying. There is something out there for you. It may not come the way you anticipated, but it is rightly yours.
5. Our prayers may not be answered the way we want them to be, but God takes us through the long way so we can thank him for where he has taken us.
6. Do not rush into making conclusions. There is still hope even when things do not look the part.
7. Trust God, he will give you what you want; probably he will do it his way, not your way.
8. Do not let people pull you down. In God, you are a victor.
9. God may take you the long way, but you will get there eventually.
10. Pray, praise God, whatever your circumstances.
11. Tell God all your fears.
12. God is good all the time
13. Keep going; you never know what may be waiting for you at the end of the tunnel.
