All Your Anxiety
Author requests article critique
Sometimes I find myself in a terrible funk and I am disheartened and anxious. Anxiety and depression are conditions that are common to everyone. Worry denies the wisdom of God. When we worry we are saying, “God doesn’t know what He’s doing. God doesn’t care. God doesn’t love. He isn’t able to deliver me from whatever is causing me to worry.” When we have anxiety we are in a state of being pulled apart, because worries cut and distract us, and wound our souls and pierce our hearts.
Here are some descriptions of anxiety:
Worry is nothing more than borrowed trouble.
Worry is unbelief in disguise.
Worry does not relieve tomorrow of its stress—it merely empties today of its strength.
The beginning of anxiety is the end of faith, and the beginning of true faith is the end of anxiety.
Depression is the Devil’s tool in thwarting the joy of believers and in immobilizing them in the Lord’s service.
All of the quotes above show how bad worry is for us. Worry is unbelief in disguise, it is borrowed trouble, it empties our strength, thwarts our joy, and ends our faith. Worry is unnecessary. There is no reason that we should try to bear our own burdens when God is willing and able to bear them for us. Worry gets you nowhere. Worry is futile! Worry hasn’t solved a problem yet.
Even King David, a man after God’s heart, experienced emotional gloom at times. “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me?” (Psalm 43:5). But David also knew the right answer for these times. David admitted his feelings to God, and told him how he was feeling. “I am downcast today. I don’t know what is going on inside of me, but I am in a terrible funk today.” Then David re-established his confidence in God. “All of my hope is in you God.” Third, David determined to praise God-“Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” This is the number one antidote for despair and cure for our emotional anxieties today.
David probably could have self-medicated in a lot of different ways. He probably had a lot of people around him that he could have talked to and told him how he was feeling. He probably had a lot of wine that he could have went to drink his sorrows away. Instead David just told God how he was feeling, and then he determined that God could take care of it, and finally he praised God. He casted his worries, anxieties, pain, and stress on God because he knew that God cared for him. “Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).
As believers we are so privileged to be able to cast all of anxieties on the Lord with strong confidence that he cares. Peter is quoting Psalms 55:22, which says, “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.” We cast our anxious care on the Lord and receive His affectionate care in return. God is willing to release you of your care, and take the care upon himself. God will avert you from the fear, or support you under it. He will take care of it in a way to show you his love and tenderness toward you. We can cast all our cares on Him. Family cares, personal cares, cares for the present, cares for the future, cares for self, cares for others, cares for finances, and cares for the church. When anxious moments arrive in your life, remember to do what King David did. Cast them to God and He will take care of them for you. Believe that! “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God (Philippians 4:6).” When we thank and praise God in everything, anxieties must cease!
