A woman who walks in purpose doesn't have to chase people or opportunities. Her light causes people and opportunities to pursue her. T. D. Jakes
My nickname for Janice is "Mrs. Popular". It seems that everybody that meets her just falls in love with her. It may have been her beauty that drew me in, but that next week, when she showed me her heart (story here http://www.springsofpraise.com/Chapter5Excerpt.pdf), I knew who I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. So, what is it about this precious wife of mine that just seems to draw people to her? Well, her sweet nature is one thing I am sure of; she simply loves people. In our 26 years together she rarely has said anything negative about anyone. She has this amazing ability to see the good in people, and I have been the number one recipient of that gift. When God first placed her in my life, believe me, I was still broken in so many ways. I had little to no self-esteem and had failed in almost everything I had ever done. I had quit school in the 10th grade and only had a GED; Because of my failed marriage, I was a single father, trying to raise two young sons on my own; I was living in low-income apartments with my boys, and drove an old run-down Toyota Celica. Boy, don't I sound like every woman's dream? Yet, she tells me that she dreamed about me before we ever met. You see, God gave her the ability to see the man I would one day become, with a woman like her by my side. Someone who would believe in me, when I didn't even believe in myself. Someone, when I would come to her and tell her I felt God wanted me to surrender my life to His service, and go to college, she just said, "If this is what you feel God wants you to do, go for it!" It didn't matter to her that I had failed in academics before; because she knew in her heart what God could do in and through me. Friends, I am sitting here in the presence of God this morning, trying to hold back tears so I can type, because of this amazing gift God gave me 26 years ago. I have no doubt I am the man I am today, because God placed her in my life, at exactly the right moment, so that I could begin walking in my divine purpose. James 1:17 says, "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father..." and I just can't see how mine could have been any more perfect. You see, since the day Janice and I met, she has been walking in her divine purpose, and I have been the beneficiary of the amazing work God has done in and through her life.
Another reason people are drawn to my precious Angel is because of her unwavering faith. The things she has gone through with this cancer, and yet she never stops praising our God. Thursday, I was in a meeting at work, and I get a text from her saying, "When are you getting home I need you." I replied, "I'm in a meeting, What's wrong?" she replied, "I have a fever and can't stop shaking." Well, that's all I needed. I didn't want to interrupt the meeting, so I showed the text to my manager, and said I have to go. As soon as I got to the car I called her, and she was throwing up. I told her to keep me on speakerphone until I got there. Seemed like half the 15-minute ride home she was throwing up. I prayed for her until she was able to talk again. As soon as I got there, I got her a wet rag for her forehead and took her temperature. It was a little over 102. I gave her some Tylenol and checked her temperature every 15 minutes and it eventually started coming down. It may sound like this was a little scary, but the truth is, compared to the many weeks we have dealt with the side effects of chemo, this was really nothing, But, just like every battle we have gone through, Janice never wavered in her faith. From the moment I called her from the car, I could barely hear her for the loud praise music in the background, and it never stopped. I cut it down when I got home, just so I could communicate with her, but she knows the way we get through such hard times, is to keep our focus on Jesus. I know, in times past, when she could barely move while going through chemo, she would be quoting healing scriptures from her prayer journal. She has been through chemo fives times, had five surgeries, and lost her hair twice. Yet, she just continues to praise God through it all. Why? Because, just like she knew in her heart what God could do in and through my life, she knows in her heart that God is going to bring healing her way.
Yesterday was a good day, Janice didn't get sick once, nor did I hear her complain about her pain. Last night she was even looking up a recipe for tomato gravy and biscuits because she knows it is my favorite. I think she lost the recipe my mom gave her, so Janice Pitts if you have it, can you send Janice Rutledge Pitts another copy? But, that is just how loving my wife is, as weak as she has been, as soon as she gets a little strength, her first thought is what she can do for me, to make me happy. You know, I know God has more things in store for me in the future, and I am excited to see what He does with my passion for writing. But, right now, caring for my amazing wife, has been such a rewarding experience. Because, it has given me an opportunity to repay, just a small fraction, of all she has done for me in my lifetime, and to show her how very much I love and appreciate her, for the amazing Proverbs 31 Woman of God she is.
"Her children stand and bless her. Her husband praises her: There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all! Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised. Reward her for all she has done. Let her deeds publicly declare her praise." Proverbs 31:28-31
