This message may sound strange coming from a 52 year old man who has been married to his best friend for over 25 years now; but you see, it was not always that way. In 1986, at the age of 23, I was left to raise one and three year old sons on my own. For five long years I stayed in a miserable relationship, the last few, just so the boys would have a mother. But one day the inevitable happened and she moved out of state; first to Florida, then on to Colorado, leaving me with the sole responsibility of raising the children. In fact, I can count on one hand the number of times she saw the boys in their lifetime. But, the reason I found myself in such a relationship in the first place was, I had no relationship with God, and was simply following the ways of the world; and when you are in a Godless marriage, your vows mean little to nothing.
So, for around four years I lived the life so many young ladies are living today. At the time, I think I was making a little over $8 an hour, and had no outside support. The judge ordered her to pay $50 per month and buy the kids clothing, but with her living over 1200 miles away, I never saw a penny during those years. Minimum wage back then was only $4.44 hr. so I made too much to qualify for public assistance from the state, so there I was, still a kid myself trying to raise two small children.
Those four years were extremely difficult. My days consisted of waking up early, cook the boy’s breakfast, taking them to daycare, work an 8-hour shift at work, pick the boys up from daycare, cook supper, clean the house, and wake up the next day and do it all over again. I had no time for a life outside of work and raising the kids, so in those four years I never dated. In fact, I was so bitter over my first marriage, I wanted nothing to do with women. I remember there were several who tried, but they never had a chance; my heart was closed for business.
By age 25, the loneliness set in. It seemed the boys were all I had and I fell into a deep depression. But, once I gave my life to the Lord, He put a plan into action and placed my Angel right in my path. The thing is, I was not looking to meet anyone. My life was way too busy for a relationship. As if what I already had on my plate was not enough, I had started taking two night classes at Hinds Community College. So a relationship was the last thing I had time for. But just like Isaiah 55:8 says, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. God had a plan, I just had to get in on it; and once I did it set me on a path for an amazing life. You see, God had already written my story; I just had to find the page He was on, and start walking in my divine destiny.
So, for all you single people out there, especially you single parents; I want to encourage you today. Your past is just that, the past. Place your trust in almighty God and leave it there. He has written a beautiful story just for you, and He has the perfect help-mate to accompany you on your journey. Just look at my life today. Do you really think Janice and I got here on our own? We work so well together simply because she was the one God selected especially for me, and placed her in my life at the perfect time. The thing to always remember is, God doesn’t make mistakes, and His timing is ALWAYS perfect! So, regardless of how lonely you may feel at the moment, or how bitter you may feel about a previous relationship, God WILL NOT leave you there. He has already written the perfect love story specifically for you, and trust me when I say, like me, one day you will look back in amazement at what the Lord has done in your life; and be like the Psalmist when he wrote, “Because your gracious love is better than life itself, my lips will praise you.” Psalm 63:3
From my heart to yours!
