Reading from the Gospel of John chapter 8 verses 3-5 and 7-11 in the NIV,” The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”“No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
These are interesting verses to ponder on? Here we have Scribes and Pharisees trying in their efforts to catch Jesus in a backsliding moment of calling into question as being our Lord and teachings to all. What they fail to realize in their deeds is that our Lord knows the hearts of men and women. For He is a supernatural and human in His appearance as having a pure heart and righteous status as being a human being and our Lord. For He is above all mankind. For His outlook in viewing the hearts of all. From His viewpoint He is able to see every person with sins and bondage to them. Remarkable and amazing viewpoint to view. From His viewpoint He is able to see every thought, the attitude that stems from each behavior, and the actions that would later fall on Him to save. Through His mission that would later come in being crucified He is able to carry the weight of sin in that we can find forgiveness because of Him. Hope is restored to us.
For His mission was not of condemning mankind, but liberation and rescue of the sins we undertake and are exposed in. Through His love His spirit showed the truth to those who listen and through forgiveness we see His grace bestowed upon us who believe. In these verses we see a woman who was caught in the act of committing adultery, in the very act as it is told. The Pharisees and Scribes encourage the crowd or should I say a mob of vengeful individuals who stood as her accusers to be stoned. As she was thrust in the presence of our Lord which she found herself which brought certainty of her fate? Which as our Lord implies in summary to the mob that who live without sin, cast the first stone? Which as they pondered on the thought, none were without sin. For her sin was to condemn her. As the mob encouraged death in stoning her to death and the Pharisees and Scribes who strive in their efforts to use the law of Moses in which to turn the tables on our Lord in condemning Him.
For their greed and lust of hatred to Jesus boiled within them. Our Lord used a calm and direct manner of giving conviction that would translate out of the hatred towards Him as He wrote in the sand. Could you imagine the shock that came of this woman as she stood there in disbelief of all of the accusations and the mindset of rejection of that mob who seek to condemn her? And even the Pharisees and Scribes who found themselves convicted of their wick thoughts of being exposed of them? For our Lord didn’t condemn her as the mob wanted, but utilized this observation moment to convict those in His presence. For He convicted the sinner and restored her life through forgiveness.
Encouraging her to go in peace and sin no more. For her sins were lifted from her and peace bestowed in her heart because of the love of our Lord. In conclusion, our sins will bring those who seek to condemn us through their hate and rejection towards us. Just like our Lord did as her accusers who stood by, He will write in the sand as He exposes the accuser’s hearts that stand before you. I encourage you today to confess and seek repentance of your sins, and go and sin no more. Feel the amazing love of our Lord’s grace that He shares with all. Be appreciative of His refinement that flows from His mercy!
