If You Ask A Koala Why She's Called A Bear
Not For Sale
If you ask a koala why she’s called a bear,
she’ll probably tell you it’s because
she’s cute like a teddy. Or she may
show you how cuddly, snuggly,
huggable, and loveable she is.
Then she’s likely to point out, she’s really not a bear,
but a marsupial. That means she has a pouch, like
a kangaroo. Her baby, called a Joey, lives there until
he, or she, is big enough to hold on for a piggy-back ride.
Out of 24 hours in a day, koalas sleep-sleep-sleep
an average of 18 to 22 hours. In a tree! Without
falling out! When they’re awake, they
groom (take a spit bath), and
munch-munch-munch eucalyptus leaves.
Eucalyptus has a sedative (calming) effect.
That’s one reason koalas sleep so much. It also
takes a long time for koalas’ tummies to digest
all those leaves. Talk about fiber (roughage)!
God gave koalas really-sharp claws, so they can climb
the eucalyptus trees, where they spend their lives. He also
gave them a leathery nose, and leathery paws, to help
protect them when they’re climbing.
And he gave each koala, his own special
paw prints, different from all other koalas.
That way you can find him, if you ever
lose him, on the big continent
of Australia, he calls home.
Isn’t God amazing?
