Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
(Romans 7:1-4 KJV)
Paul here is speaking to believers, he’s speaking of the Law of Moses, but it could refer to any type of religious Law. The Law has dominion as long as people try to live by the Law (Religious Law). Many, in the fact that they do not understand sanctification, are trying to live for God by means of the Law.
Preachers and teachers without a clear understanding are training folk to live by the Law or a form of religious bondage and they are committing spiritual adultery and helping folk to be adulterers (spiritually speaking)
Every saved person needs to understand that there are only two places that they can be and that is under grace or Law.
If the believer does not understand the meaning of the cross and sanctification and the victory that this means and guarantees he will always live under the Law which will produce only failure. Here Paul uses an analogy, the marriage bond, to show us the nature of Law and Grace and a term not often understood or used, “Spiritual Adultery”.
I used this term some weeks ago and the person I spoke to had no idea what I meant and in fact twisted it to mean something else because of their lack of study, understanding and desire to really know God’s Word. They are fine to just take anything that comes along and sounds good, but when faced with the real truth then the enemy senses this and anger, embarrassment and frustration occurs….which could be avoided by people simply studying and reading proper translations and or materials and listening to the right preachers and teachers and not just “feel good” people.
To the verses again….in effect we see that the “woman” here now has two husbands at least in God’s eyes; following this analogy, the Holy Spirit through Paul will give us a great truth;
many Christians are living a life of Spiritual Adultery; they are married to Christ, but they are in effect serving another husband, “ the Law”, or anything else that your faith is placed in (i.e. the champion in you, 40 days of purpose, name it claim it, water bottle ministry,Hebraic roots, feast days, etc ).
In Matthew 5, Christ fulfilled and abolished the Law -
If the husband dies, the woman is free to marry and serve another; the Law of Moses, being satisfied in Christ, is now dead to the Believer and the believer is free to serve Christ without the Law having any part in his life or living.
Once we are “married” to Christ we are no longer under obligation to the Law. The Law, to answer questions in your minds, the Law is not dead per se, but we are dead to the Law because we are dead to its effects; this means that we are not to try to live for God by means of the “Law,” whether the Law of Moses, or laws made up by men or of ourselves; we are to be dead to all Law
(Spiritual Law- or any Law that keeps us in legalistic bondage or from truly serving Christ).
The crucifixion of Christ satisfied the demands of the broken Law we could not satisfy; but Christ did it for us; having fulfilled the Law in every respect, the Christian is not obligated to Law in any fashion, only to Christ and what He did at the cross.
We are raised with Him in newness of life and should ever understand that Christ has met, does meet, and shall meet our every need; we look to Him exclusively, referring to what He did at the cross.
Proper fruit can only be brought forth by the Believer constantly looking to Christ and the cross; in fact, Christ must never be separated from the work of the cross; to do so will produce “another Jesus” II Corinthians 11:4
Some will and have asked what Spiritual Adultery is?
Anything that places itself in place of or in front of Truth which is God’s Word and the correct interpretation of it by prayer and study of the proper materials. Anything you put your faith in, at the same time , while saying you trust Christ.
1) 12 step programs to a better you
2) Cell groups
3) Celebrate Recovery
4) Promoting False Prophets as well as adhering to their teachings
5) Quoting Scripture without proper understanding of the scripture and causing others to err in their walk with Christ, when it could be avoided with careful study and “reading”.
6) Encounter Groups
There are a plethora of things that could be properly labeled as spiritual adultery and rightly so, but the mainstream items listed above are only a few but widely used. Too many of these items bring in “ways” to live and never produce Jesus or an encounter with Him.
When as one famous author and so called preacher said “we need more than the Bible and something better” when people reach this plateau of stupidity, it’s absurd and dangerous.
A few days ago in my last statement here, someone said to me that “maybe the Bible (particular passage or the whole) was written for another time and another place, maybe this does not apply to us now in our present age or time. Friend let me tell you this, the Bible was written for us and for all time. The Laws we are told to keep in it concerning this world are just that. We keep them now and until we leave (die).
We do not use part of it as we want to and then not another part of it is left alone when our human nature desires to do otherwise. In this case there is “Spiritual Adultery” being committed.
The person is “married” to Christ and His Word as long as they feel comfortable but when they do not understand or do not willfully wish to understand and could, they then walk away; if even for a short while, and in turn are committing the act of “Spiritual Adultery.”
God’s Word is for us and for now and for our future and even for our eternity.
So please study before you make choices and before you make statements that show a lack of care and concern for the truth of God’s Word…
