Miracle Stories
Witnessing a real miracle is a wonderful experience, yet being a part of that miracle is even better. I hope to share with people how spectacular it is to know God personally, just as I’m sure many of you already do. Yet you’ll still enjoy hearing how God has revealed Himself to me. But for those who do not know God on a relational level and only have heard of him, I hope my experiences will stir up inside you a ravenous hunger for God.
The First Taste is the Sweetest
I was merely a ten year old boy, alone, walking past a scary cemetery on a dark night. Spanish moss hung like gray beards from the spectral arms of oak trees lining both sides of the road. Eerie sounds assaulted my ears, sounding akin to creatures straight out of a Hollywood horror film. It was quite frightening. My young imagination had me terrified; freaked out over unexplainable and out of place noises. Perhaps the footfalls I heard were imaginary, but the screeching sounds were real. A few days before, my folks had warned me that another boy about my age had vanished from the neighborhood, and was still missing.
I enjoy reminiscing over my very first vivid encounter with God. Having a personal meeting with the Creator of this vast cosmos is an epically life altering experience. Forever thereafter, a soul will long for those euphoric moments of sensing their closeness to the Lord. God’s glorious presence delivers the warmest and most satiating sense of peace to the soul, and can be likened to a heavy dose of spiritual heroin.
That night, many years ago now, I was frozen in place, and trembling at the thought of vicious killers appearing out of the darkness—either man or beast. I’d heard about the love of Jesus: How He would be the best of friends to anyone who wants Him, and that He will protect us if we will but call upon Him. Barely able to move, I didn’t know of anything else to do.
“Jesus, please help me. I’m so scared! Please protect me! Help me get home. I was supposed to be there a half hour ago.”
When God answers, it’s not always so clear and obvious, but this time there was no doubt. I was suddenly surrounded by an intense, yet soft light, which illumined the area around me for fifty yards in every direction, including those trees that had appeared so spooky as shadows. The light seemed natural, though there were no earthly devices to create it. Instantly, I was filled with comfort and assurance. I don’t know how I knew, but I understood that I was in God’s presence.
A soft, yet firm touch clasped my right hand. All fear immediately vanished and was replaced with resolute strength, courage and peace. Someone invisible to the eye was holding my hand! I could feel His warmth and hear His silent words in my mind. “I am here.” That’s all He said. It’s all that was needed. God was holding my hand and walking me home! All of a sudden, I wasn’t so anxious to get there. I wanted this one mile walk to last forever.
Many decades later, I now believe it was an angel of God who walked beside me as a young boy. Yet the Lord had answered my call for help. That first encounter with God will always be cherished in my forever memory. Later in life I would witness God’s power, experience His chastisement, be filled with His Spirit, and see His hand at work, miraculously, as well as through more natural means. And I would spend a lot of time in His presence, always wanting more of Him.
I've seen lots of miracles and heard of many more. I consider my first encounter with God a miracle. Yet, God has done much more spectacular things in my life than this first encounter. And I want to share each of them with you, one at a time.
