Apologetics
I begin with the premise that God is far bigger than the human mind can fully comprehend; God is far bigger than human vocabulary can fully express. I set out to write this in response to the views shared in The Mirror Letters column, dated Friday, 6th June-12th June, 2014, by one Anthony Kyei, titled “Jesus is mighty God, not Almighty God”. His views are clearly the position of a sect called Jehovah`s Witnesses and by extension Arianism.
I wish to submit that such views are at variance with that of orthodox / mainline / evangelical Christianity. It hits hard at a fundamental Christian belief, that is, the belief in the Trinity. The Nicene creed states in part thus: “I believe in one God…”. The Athanasian Creed states, “…,the father is the Almighty God, the son is the Almighty God, and the Holy Spirit is the Almighty God…”. It further states that “in his deity-Christ is equal to the father and under the father in his humanity”. These are cardinal beliefs of the Christian church and find robust Scriptural endorsement. One of which is John 1:1 which some have sought to twist. Bible translations such as the New World Translation have deliberately changed the rendering “the word was God” (a phraseology that can be seen in most Bible translations) to the “word was a god”. This translation has however been discredited by a vast majority of Bible Scholar (Dr. Julius Mantey – a Greek Scholar). Leon Morris, an expert on John`s Gospel, commenting on John 1:1 states, “John is not merely saying that there is something divine about Jesus. He is affirming that He is God and doing so emphatically as we see from the word order in the Greek.” New Testament Scholar F. F. Bruce agrees, noting that the structure of this clause in the Greek “demands the translation “the word was God”.
A huge body of Scriptural texts prove without a doubt (to the unbiased mind) that the Trinity is a Scriptural concept and that Jesus as a member of the Godhead is necessarily co-equal with the father. However, for want of space, a few will be noted. Jehovah is called mighty God (Isaiah 10:21), so is Jesus (Isaiah 9:6). Jehovah is to be worshiped (proskuneo) (Exodus 34:14, Dueteronomy 6:13), similarly Jesus is to be worshipped (proskuneo) (Hebrews 1:6, Mathew 28:17). Both Jehovah (Numbers 14:18, Psalms 86:4-5) and Jesus (Mathew 9:2, John 1:29, Luke 24:47) have the power to forgive sins. Jehovah is ‘I AM’ (Exodus 3:14), Jesus is ‘I AM’ (John8:58). Jehovah is the creator (Genesis1:1, Psalm 104:5), so is Jesus (John 1:3, John 1:10, Colossians 1:16).
There is so much more to share but for want of space and time. The testimony of the Holy Writ is quite clear. Jesus is God and as God he is necessarily co-equal with the father. The intricacies of the Godhead may not make sense to the human mind but that is essentially because we are human (God is infinite, we are finite). Suffice to state that a contrary view is fallacious, erroneous and deceptive especially when attempts are made to support such views by Scripture twisting and misinterpretations.
