The Three Enemies of Love
Free to Share
Author requests article critique
I have carefully pondered these enemies and their schemes and truly realized they are the ones causing us to walk in darkness. Here they are, and there are three with their cohorts and their lackeys.
1. The lust of the flesh or the spirit of lust.
Lust uses the avenues of love and distorts them into something so base, that it has ruined many lives to live free as God created, and thereby missing out on the abundance of blessing.
Lust is sometimes called the opposite of love and in many ways it is, but the main purpose of lust is an all out affront against the love of God for his creation called mankind or humanity. Mankind was made for love and the assault against mankind by the enemy was to ruin that love.
Love’s ultimate expression is in intimacy, where physically the two (a man and his wife) become one, which is not possible without being physical, emotional and spiritual all at the same time. Lust however seeks to separate the three and destroy it’s fullness.
Intimacy is the highest form of worship; more than singing songs on a Sunday morning and more than a time of bible reading and more than rehearsing daily prayers. Worship is an adoration of the One who is the source of our being and the sustenance of our life and even more; the One who we look up to inspire and motivate us to keep going on a daily basis. Woe to us if that is the lucky horseshoe or the sunshine girl on page two or the horoscope of the day!
Intimacy is such a picture of Jesus entering in to give life! No wonder the enemy seeks to destroy it through lust.
2. The lust of the eye or the spirit of greed.
Greed is an evil spirit and seeks to destroy love.
As one said some time ago,” Mankind was made for love and things were to be used but in this world of chaos it has been reversed and therefore things are loved and mankind is used.”
Greed is such an evil spirit that it will stop at nothing to gain things for possession including the dignity, health and well-being and even the lives of those whom have become an obstruction. Greed loses all sight of the great Creator and His grace.
The spirit of greed let’s you believe as an absolute truth that you are alone, and life is about you and your survival. Greed can never embrace the reality of the need for a seed to die. Greed will imprison us in a impenetrable fortress, protecting us from all intruders and ourselves from ever escaping... We shall die alone, without love. To love self is no love at all, for love will never seek its own.
3. The pride of life or spirit of pride.
The spirit of pride is also a sworn enemy to love. Pride, like greed seeks to satisfy self though not so much in possession as in status. Pride gives a false assessment to our identity and will exalt itself above others and yes above God as well. Love will not boast, but esteem all others better than themselves.
The spirit of pride will also keep us from searching out and having communion with our Creator, God. It has no need for salvation as it has elevated itself above God. The spirit of pride says that I am better than you. Is that true? I may hit the nail and you may hit your thumb... but you’re the greatest cook and I may burn the toast... Who is the better one? Pride considers no one but self and establishes a universal conclusion... I am better; I am greater, etc.
Love will never seek its own. (Notice how I did not say, “true love”) Love needs no adjectives. It is complete in itself. Love in its purest form can only be true. Love will not boast. The nature of love is such that ‘I’ always take the second place... except when it comes from you. When love comes from you I take first place, for love will never seek its own. That is why love is so amazing!
Lust, greed and pride will keep you from living free and loving free. You will do well to remove them from your daily life.
