What does it mean to "Be still, and know that I am God”?
“Be still and know that I am God,” is from Psalms 46:10. Psalm 37:7 “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.”
What does it mean by be still? To be still means to be quiet and submit to his will (be resigned to his will), and to live in an assured expectation of the appearance of divine Providence in their layout. To “know” means that we acknowledge that he is God, a sovereign being that does whatsoever he pleases. He is unchangeable in his nature, purposes, promises, and covenant. He is omnipotent, able to help us and deliver us at the last extremity, and his is omniscient, he knows us completely (all of our troubles). He is an all wise God, and does all things after the counsel of his own will, and makes all things work together for good to them. He is faithful to his word and promises.
God wants to have a personal relationship with you. He wants you to not only have a conversation with Him, but he wants to speak to you as well. Listening to God requires us to be still. Life is often busy, but when we take some time out of our day and just listen, God will show up. God wants us to put Him first, and this shows Him that we know He is God. He knows all of your circumstances that you are in right now, and if you call upon Him He will be there for you, and all things will be possible for you. “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13)
You can call on Him today, and He will meet you.
First, you must become right with Him, because He is righteous. Our sin separates us from Him. “Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light.” (John 3:19) God loves us so much though that He sent His son Jesus Christ to take our place, so that we can have a personal relationship with Him. “I am the way the truth and the life. No one comets to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) Jesus is the only way that we can have a personal relationship with God. “For God so loved the world that He sent his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16).
If you don’t know who God is then I want to share with you three steps you can take today (no matter where you are). Admit you are a sinner and turn away from sin (John 8:11). Believe (have faith) that when Jesus died on the cross he took the punishment for all your sin and He rose to life again to conquer death (John 1:29). Receive (ask) Jesus as your Lord and Savior. “To all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” (John 1:12). Children know who their Father is, and their Father knows them, so this is how “we know” He is God.
If you would like to come to God today here is a suggested prayer. The exact wording doesn’t matter, what counts is the attitude in your heart.
Lord Jesus, thank You for showing me how much I need you. Thank You for dying on the cross for me. Please forgive all my failures and the sins of my past. Make me clean and help me start fresh with You. I now receive You into my life as my Lord and Savior. Help me to love and serve You with all my heart. Amen.
Jesus said: “Whoever comes to me I will never drive away.” (John 6:37).
Jesus knows the Father, and the Father knows him. If you know Jesus then you can know the Father. "All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” (Matthew 11:27)
Now be still. Talk to God, and then be quiet and let Him speak to you. Take 5 minutes out of your day and listen to Him.
