Know Who You Are in Scripture
He said: I am 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Make straight the way of the Lord,”'
John 1:23 (NKJV)
John the Baptist knew his calling in life. He knew that One greater than him was coming. Given that we have hind sight, it's easy for us to recognise the roles of John the Baptist and Jesus. Jesus of course was the Messiah. But John had an assurance of Jesus was (even though at this point he hadn't seen him), and he also knew what His role was. He found himself in scripture and quoted this to the priests and Levites who questioned him.
John knew his calling and stuck to what he was called to do. He didn't try to do more than he was called to do and likewise, he didn't scare away from his calling. He embraced it. He lived a wild life really. But interestingly enough, his mother Elizabeth knew that her son was called to be different. I think most mothers would worry about sons who lived life like John the Baptist did. But Elizabeth knew his calling and John knew his calling.
What happened if he hadn't been baptising the day that Jesus came along? Jesus would not have been baptised and something significant happened that day. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit came together in a beautiful way that manifest the relationship of the trinity which had not been seen before nor since. John the Baptist knew his calling and stuck to his mandate.
Jesus (although He was of course the Son of God) did exactly the same thing when he went into the temple. Luke 4:17-18 says that 'He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: “The spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the broken-hearted.” He went into the temple and found himself in scripture. He found his role in the book of Isaiah.
Who are you in scripture? Have you found yourself in scripture so that you know, that you know, that you know what you are called to do. That way, you won't try to fulfil a role that is not yours. You won't try to do more and you won't shy away from what you're supposed to do. If you have not already done so, ask the Lord to reveal yourself through scripture. Find out your role and stick to your mandate.
Thank you Lord that you make the way so plain for us. Although it's not always easy to find out what your will is for us, I do thank you that you make yourself known to those who press in to you. Help me to find myself in scripture and stick to my calling. In Jesus name. Amen.
